New ORA Release

I don't think a lot of hobbiests know about the $300 fish requirement. But, I guess it makes business sense to them. From the apparent "shortage" of access to their corals, there is a limited supply. But those clown fish, which ora has really nice ones, reproduce prolifically. So the corals are a carrot on a stick to sell their fish, instead of the LFS's going to other breeders/suppliers. If it helps keep them in business, I say great, so they will keep supplying great corals.

Give it a year and hobbiests will be selling frags like crazy, at a whole lot less $$$.

My 2 cents.

But I definately understand the frustration of hobbiests that don't have a LFS that can handle that volume of fish.
 
They could offer the corals at a minimum $$ purchase. So they can just get the things that sell. Not be stuck with a fish inventory that isn't moving! ORA should realize the money isn't in the fish. They make a lot of money on fish that they wouldn't sell if it were not for the coral interest. It is simple economics I know but ORA shouldn't force their fish on their dealers in order for them to buy corals. If they are having to do this to sell their fish, imagine how the LFS owner feels when he is left holding the bag on the fish he really didn't want to begin with!

How about a $300 minimum coral order? They can't afford $300 every time they want a coral. It is simple extortion!!!!!!!!
 
Not that it makes much difference but the minimum fish purchase is $200.00 and I see no incentive for ORA to change their policies as they told me they sell all they produce with the current minimum fish order requirement. If they were to just sell the corals they market would quickly become saturated ( assuming they could meet the demand) and they would not be able to sell them for as much. This has happened already with their older releases.

See you are sadly mistaken. By what you just said you prove my point. They sell everything they produce even with the $200 (I have been told by more than one LFS owner it is $300) fish order. You can't saturate the market when you control the amount that goes out. Plus when you only have a certain number of corals to distribute. What taking away the minimum fish order does is allows other smaller LFS's to be able to carry what most people want......their corals. The majority, not all, but the majority of people buying a clown fish don't care if it was tank raised or wild caught. I have one and I don't even know where it came from!

The fact of the matter is it is ORA's way of selling it's tank raised goldfish and they know it. And we, the consumer, get punished by limiting the available access to their corals because our local stores can't keep forking out an extra $200-$300 each time they order. Like I said before, it's extortion!

All they have to do then is release only a certain number of frags a year and someone still won't get what they want. So I don't see all the fuss about the $200/$300 fish purchase to buy corals. Maybe it's their way to garuntee that the corals go to a quality shop that is moving and can move some good healthy products.

Try it's a way to guarantee the sale of their fish! Regardless of the shop quality. They don't know the quality of the shops and don't care. Saying a shop can afford an order of fish to get corals is a sign of a quality store is ridiculous! This is just how they help move their fish. And it is wrong.

What if your LFS said to get this ORA frag you must buy this ORA fish. And not at a discounted rate either. Tell me how you would feel about that. Sure you don't have to buy it, but if you just want the coral and not the extra expense of a fish you don't need.......it would make you mad.

Right now you don't have to absorb the overs. If you did then it would matter. It matters to me because I can't get the corals from lack LFS's ability to order regularly from ORA due to this "mark up!"
 
Cubed it's definately $200 and $200 is nothing. The fish sell like crazy and are captive and eat pellets the day they come in. What else could you ask for? As far as not having to order fish and still getting corals that wouldn't happen. Many of the "new releases" are limited not just because they are trying to cause a stir but because they are also very limited. Typically 25-50 the first release date. Most stores that meet the $200 for fish are still limited to one new release. Look at Fosters nobody does more and they get 2-3 at a time and sell them faster than they can get them for a ton of money. If a big store that buys a ton of ORA was allowed to buy as many corals as they wanted your little store would never see a new release until we were done flooding the market.
 
They lowered it $200 and as a Store owner $200 worth of high quality clownfish (probably the most popular selling fish) is worth it, especially if as a store you have the market to sell SPS corals. The fact of the matter is most LFS don't have a market for SPS or can't even keep them alive for that matter.

It amazes me the things people find to complain about on RC.

Personally me being a small store I like the fact they limit the amount of Frags they sell. If they didn't all the big websites (the death of LFS anyway) would buy them all leaving nothing for the hard working little guy!

I actually was talking to my LFS about ORA and was shocked at that minimum fish requirement, but also if you want a particular coral you can only get one(??) so you can't order half a dozen red table whatevers... Although he said this is because too many people simply getting a business license (or had one) not necessarily a fish store one, and simply ordering frags. So in order to stop this they require you take a TON of fish in reality what's the wholesale cost of a clownfish? $5? $10? So that's like 20-40 fish(I know for basement breeding it's not very profitable, don't know how it works on a larger scale though), now it might have worked out for the better for them as well.

That being said, I really don't see what's special about ORA, yeah they do occasionally release some really nice frags, but buying frags from fellow hobbyist works just the same, and if anything is even more environmentally friendly since they don't need to fly all over the country to get to you :)

I have a good LFS that orders the frags and sells them at a good rate, usually goes through an order a week. ANy guess what the fish dont sell. How many clowns can he sell? He gets a lot of regulars from the reef clubs that have established tanks with no more room for fish.

I know I have said this before in the toy business I am in they have this hot product webkins. In order for me to get them they made terms where I had to spend a few thousand on everday product. http://www.playthings.com/article/CA6577499.html This is very similiar to what ORA is doing here. My LFS cant sell the fish at the rate he can sell the frags at. If they dont have the demand for the supply of fish they are breeding then maybe they need to slow down their supply instead of force customers to buy stuff they dont need. JMO
 
The more corals they sell the faster they get fragged and resold and soon enough the market is saturated. Look at all the earlier ORA corals. They no longer sell at near what they once did nor is the demand there. I see nothing wrong with their methods based on the present demand for some of their corals. If you want to change it it will not be by paying top dollar, getting on waiting lists, salivating over the next release, or even complaining about the limited nature of the corals. It'll only reinforce the policy. According to ORA moving fish is not an issue.

They must send your area better stock. The ones I see around Dallas usually look sick.
 
ORA has the perfect idea. Everyone wants their corals so badly they have to buy the fish. They are just smart when it comes to buisness. We may not like it but its their way and obviously they are doing it right since there are about 10 threads going right now that have to do with there corals.

but lets get back to the reason this thread started and lets see a pic!

This is true, I had bought two ORA clowns here and both died of Brook. I've bought ORA clowns in southern Cali and they were fine. Still live on in my friends tank back home.
 
So my LFS said the shipment was delayed in Tenn. I went down to pick one up and he was sorry.... not til tommorrow.

DARN, DARN, DARN

So I guess pics tommorrow!
