NEW plumbing method for an ULTRA QUIET REEF TANK!!!! LONG !!!!

oh hi Pat,

I've had this setup in my tank since the beginning of my new tank so it's been setup for about 4 months, but I've also had it on my older setup without the backup for over a year.

No problems so far and quiet as a mouse, only problem I have with noise come from my external pumps.

Peace,
John H.

that's good to know. I know you've helped me with the skimmer. (which by the way is finally running. I may need some tips adjusting it. Only turned it on an hour ago or so)
I have referred this thread to a few people and they have gotten back to me thanking me.

Hey Pat,
You should be able to find plenty of info. on the MRC thread on how to adjust your skimmer to the way that you like it.
:)

Going through that thread as we speak. Thanks!

I have a 130g with a mag 9.5 return. My bulkhead is 2" and i added a 1.5" reducer and i only have 1 hole drilled. how should i go about on doing this? My overflow isn't really noisy, sounds like water trickling down but my sump has way too many air bubles coming out. I would like to make it dead silent and have no or little air bubles.

Mike,

Since it seems to work very well. You don't even need a standpipe from what I understand now. I personally would make an eggrate cage to put right over the bulkhead to allow good flow but also to keep critters or anything else that might find its way into the overflow from clogging up the pipe. Definitely make sure nothing, and I mean nothing can clog your setup.

Peace,
John H.

I have a hang in overflow since my tank is not RR (reef ready). Before I used to play with sponges so I could get no water splashing or air being sucked into the drain. It's a "pita", trust me. I even tried before the durso mod, even though I did not have a lot of space in my overflow and also stockman, but the both work with a hole in the top and they suck a lot of air, so noise was still there. Came a long this thread and it was a very great idea so I wanted to try it badly but as you all know it was hard to find that Perforated Pipe that derbie was describing in a local store so I went to home depot instead and got a 1" PVC pipe and drilled holes evenly into it. Took out the sponge and the 2-3" PVC that holds it and slipped the one that I drilled holes into it. It works like a charm, it's so quiet that sometimes I worry that it's not wroking at all. If I get hands into a digital camera will post pictures on this thread.

The only problem I have is that my level in the overflows tends to fluctuate a few inches over several days time. I left on monday and everything was about where I wanted it, came back this morning and they were both(fuge is set this way too) almost to the top. Not hitting the emergency stand yet, but close. Then in a day or so they will slowly come back down. I am beginning to wonder if it has something to do with the water tension or something odd like that?

I can get one later, but its pretty straight forward. I have a standpipe with a strainer on it. I can set the height of the water with my gatevalve, it will stay for days, then the water level will slowly rise in the overflow, usually it will drop back down.

I am starting to think maybe the flow out of my pump is not consistant... I am running a panworld(iwaki clone).

at the beggining it was in my sump, even daily so my skimmer was not skimming (AquaC EV 120), since it is sensitive to sudden water changes. But when I played around with the ball valve (since I can't find a gate valve at home depot), it does not fluctuate anymore, and skimmer is skimming now like before. It is truly very quiet. 0 bubles going in my sump thrught the drain. The only bubles that I have in the sump now are the small bubles that the skimmer produces which are being taken care by the sponge in the sump. overall I give two thumbs up for the guy who came with this idea

I have often wondered if the moon affects the water level slightly. My overflows start flushing and gurgling around the same time on certain nights. I asked a plumber one time why the water level in the toilet fluctuated and his answer was the moons effect on the Earths gravity. After all it does move oceans and cause tides.

Yep, definately works. When I first set up my tank my wife looked at me like "that awful sound is not permanent, right?" I tried a lot of stuff till I ran across this thread. Thanks!!!

I agree it works, as long as you have an emergency pipe. Still havent figured out why my water fluctuates about a full cycle every week, well almost 2 now. I had to bring the strainer above the water line in the fuge because it couldnt handle the large swings. (no emergency pipe) The fuge flow has been solid now for over a week?

But then again so has my main tank, except its at the low point of the swing and Im afraid to adjust because if it swings again after I adjust it... it may be ugly.

mc-cro, can you describe or, even better, post a picture of your sump/fuge setup? and the water flow throught it? I have a few ideas about your why you're getting fluctuating levels, but I don't want to send you on a wild goose chase just yet.
