where do you have the gate valve installed on your mod?

the ball balve is installed before the !" PVC pipe reaches the sump, I heard with a gate valve it works better but I cannot find a gate valve at my local home depot store. the ball valve works like a charm to, no changes in water level and 0 bubles in my sump.

where do you get the endcaps for the vacuum hose tubing?

it came with my overflow setup

I ordered my gate valve from US PLASTICS . Very fast shipping

Adjusting water level with ball valves....

Adjusting water level with ball valves....

I have followed this thread closely and tried this method for my 175 gal. I could not find the plastic gate valve, thus I use the ball valve instead and had too much trouble in adjusting the water level in the overflow so that it will cover the perforated part of the drain. Since I glued the connections, I am pretty much stuck with the ball vales unless I want to take everything apart which I definitely does not want. Anyone with good experience in adjusting the water level with the ball valves ?

Thanks,

I guess I'm lucky that my local H&S ACE Hardware carries PVC gate valves in various sizes. Although they are closed right now due to a roof collapse from the snowstorm a couple of weeks ago.

having probs with my emergency overflow. I have a dual CPR overflow and one of the drains can handle all the flow. The other is my emergency.
I have a peice of PVC glued on top of the Emergency bulkhead so that , the pipe reaches above the water level in the overflow. if there were a clogged drain, the water rises in the overflow and spills into the emergency.

the problem is when the water spills into the emergency, the water level in the tank rises and the tank floods.

What is the deal???? herbie, you out there???

Ill post some pics later this evening. Thanks

drock59,

Your problem is the CPR overflow itself, since it's height is limited, you will run into that problem as the flow put out by your return pump will determine whether your tank will overflow. The higher you put the pipe, the higher the water reaches in your overflow box, thus setting up a new equilibrium and this new equilibrium in your case is causing the the tank to overflow.

So, to make the case more extreme, say you put that emergency pipe 2 mm below the very top of the water in your tank where it is normally when everything is working properly, and you suddenly get a clog... Now, if you were flowing only like 50 gph through the overflow, the tank probably wouldn't overflow, because the pipe could easily handle that flow, but if you started pushing more and more water, due to the increased depth of water in the external overflow box because of the high pipe, you'll get a flood. So, now you've got to find a balance.

Peace,
John H.

could you elaborate more please. Perhaps a drawing or pic. I understand what you are saying but i do not understand why the emergency pipe cannot handle the water if it is the same diameter.

ive been fiddling with this thing all afternoon and am about to throw it in the trash. From the reviews people give CPR maybe i should. If anyone knows how to do this with a cpr, please tell me.

I too decided to give this mod a whirl. Finally! Quiet! I love it! I know that Herbie has bailed out, but I just wanted to say thanks.

well i will be doing this shortly . I just ordered a new overflow box and cant wait! it amazes me that this idea has not spread like wildfire. I show this thread to anyone asking about a durso.

It is a great idea and it will continue to live on in RC. It's just harder to implement than a durso or a stockman standpipe. I think that is one reason and most people just don't like messing with a gate valve or ball valve.

Different people have different tolerances for noise. I for one don't mind noise too much, but I don't like the salt creep from the bubbles that come out of the drain with a durso or stockman. I know my pumps are far louder than the water movement in my overflow and associated drainpipe.

Peace,
John H.

i figure a little more work on the setup is worth the silence and peace of mind. once you get it dialed in, you shouldnt have to mess with the ball valve much, should you?

USE A GATE VALVE! You will never get it dialed in with a ball valve. Once it is set it is as quiet as a church mouse
