NEW plumbing method for an ULTRA QUIET REEF TANK!!!! LONG !!!!

I'm also very interested in this concept one drain to skimmer body directly and another to sump. Have anybody tried this?

that is how I am currently redoing the plumbing. except, I am not going direclty into the skimmer, my emergency/dorso is flowing to the skimmer box, then being fed into the skimmer.

I have read mixed results of feeding a skimmer direclty from an overflow into the body, you may want to research that mod a little bit more.

Thank you mc-cro, where can I find info on this? So you have both drains working, main and emergency? What is your gallon rate through emergency? As I understand you using emergency/durso for stability reasons?
Thank you.

as for feeding the skimmer, what type of skimmer are you using? I assume it would have to be a recirc. needlewheel to be able to feed it at such low gph. do a search, or try and read through the
endless asm threads....

as for my gph through my emergency, I would guestimate at about 30-40gph, maybe a little less. And yes, I am using the emergency durso to keep the water height stable in the overflow.
If you go back several pages I have done this set up twice, and was never able to keep a stable overflow level, until I put the durso on the emergency drain and just let it trickle thru the duro.

I changed my magaflow to this plumbing method last week and it works! No toilet flushing sound any more! I haven't implemented emergency drain yet. I will do it this weekend.

I have one ball valve at drain and one T-off return gate valve to adjust overall flow. For the past one week, the water level in overflow is kept constant.

mc-cro, I've read your reply and did exactly what you did. It trickles a little, but working just fine. Yes I planing 12" body recirculating skimmer and just want to try if I can feed it with one overflow. I'll try to look for ASM thread, but , you know it'll take forever to read it. I thought may be you know exact link. Thanks.

I skimmed this thread for about an hour or so today. Before I read it, I piped my tank like this:

I have 2 overflow boxes that are 8" deep. My original thought was to pipe it so the right one would get diverted to the fuge and the left would go to the skimmer section, with the pump in the middle chamber.

The noise was out of control wit the modified external dursos, so I plugged the holes in the durso tops and modulated the valves and all is quiet. Actually the right valve is wide open (viewed from back of tank).

Since I have 2 flow boxes, do you see a need for an emergency standpipe?

Is there trouble with this setup using 2 boxes?

If I make on an emergency and the other the standard box, do I lower my valves down and tee the main overflow to the sump to take one to the fuge and the other to the skimmer section?

Anyone done this with 2 boxes and have any photos? Thanks!

thanks for the reminder had totally forgoten about this. I changed over my plumbibg today and it works like a charm. I set it so the other standpipe has just a trickle of water in it. When my wife came home she asked what I was listening to. I told her the tank. She said it sounded like it was off. But it was running full boar.

My problem was my sump was in the basement and I'm running a hammerhead on the system which is a lot of flow. Everything I tried still had to much noise for my liking. Tghis did the trick. I had done it on one of my first tanks a long time ago. Can't believe i didn't try this in the first place. :)

Just leaving my mark so I can find this thread again. THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST MOD FOR OVERFLOWS EVER! I always recommend this method to people.

yes indeedy although now I keep thinking something is wrong withthe tank :) sice I can't hear it. Everytime I come home now I run over and check things out.

Haha! I did/do that too!!

Some advice...

The initial thread was incredibly hard to read - it sounded more like a salespitch than a description of how the system works - though the prose was interesting. :) Less text is more (I never go through the entire thing), pictures speak 1,000 words, and I am interesting in seeing them!

The ACE Hardware store down the street from me has 1.5" PVC gate valves for under $10. They have several other sizes as well. If there is one near you it may be worth calling them.

How about "Herbies Ultra Quiet Siphon Overflow"..........
Just kidding ........
It does work pretty good though, if you are looking for a QUIET reef tank! It does require some slight adjustments from time to time. A gate valve is really the most adaptable valve for this application. A ball valve is just to hard to get the FINE adjustments required to get this system to work properly. An emergency drain shoud be considered mandatory for this mod to work safely and trouble/worry free.

I will post some pics soon of a a custom made external overflow box, with an emergencey drain, that Jeff at Lifereef made for me specifically for this style of overflow system. Its a pretty sweet overflow box, that runs "ULTRA"quiet using this system.

Could you explain how this would work in the meantime?
