New Tank or wait...

The DQ King
Im about to setup my tank(Sat) Have everything bout, but ive been looking at houses and will prob be moving in a year or less. Do i wait for the tank or get things setup / frags then move and have a chance at them dieing.
:hmm3:

Wait. Spend the year planning. I think stuff can survive the move, but it creates a situation where you have to do everything in so much rush that you create a system that is cobbled together too quickly.

If you wait until you move it to build your plan, you'll do it right.

Ya, i have everything to set it up at the moment. I just dont know when i will be moving. I can still keep the tank where it is so thats not a biggy, but i will eventually want to move it to my house from my parents and im worried transporting everything 30min will be hard on it.

or i could just keep it there and save up for a big mamma jamma. lol

It will suck having your tank 30 minutes away. I'm pretty sure Mom and Dad aren't going to do your water changes, clean the skimmer cup, top off, feed the fish (without overfeeding) etc.

It would be better to wait, it will survive the move but take my word for it, moving reef tanks is a major PITA.

How big is the tank? That would be a function of my decision. If it were under 75, I'd probably set it up now. Any larger and I would wait.

40g / 30g sump.
Sorry lol, made the post late night last night and didn't realize i didn't put that in.

Thanks guys

I would set that up, but I would certainly appreciate the argument against doing so. It will be a good day's work to move it, but not wholly unreasonable.

I would totally set it up, get yourself more experience with begginer fish. Or what I would also do is buy all my uncured live rock and cycle it, that way, by the time you move, it will be ready

Ya i WANT to set it up, but im afraid of losing SPS in the transfer.
Its just sitting in my room looking all sexy....... NEEDS TO BE FILLED lol

Since you don't have any official moving date, I'd probably set it up. Just don't mount your corals to anything big, IMO corals are the hardest part to move...especially if you put them on large rock structures.

I also wouldn't bother with sand, or atleast no more than you're willing to toss...it's just one more thing you won't have to deal with and no sand will make catching the fish and CUC a little easier. (When you break down a tank and you disturb a sandbed it will cloud up like you can't imagine)

i would set it up with out a doubt, if you are concerned then you can run a very simplistic 40 without sump and keep the load small, just a couple easy fish and some softies/zoas/easy lps, sps i would wait until you are moved as it is usually very tempermental.

Ohhh a 40/30 isn't so bad. Moving tanks is a pain, but not unreasonable for that size.

I take back my earlier statement, I would say go for it, hands on experience is the best way to learn. Just go easy on expensive corals and extremely sensative fish until after the move perhaps!

After you cycle, start with some easy fish like clowns and some soft corals to get a feel for things! Have fun and read lots!

Ya i was thinking of NO sand bed, for the moment... once the move is a GO then ill think about sand. Im currently torn between BB / sand (other forum) but for the time i think ill go with it, get things rolling and save $ for a reactor or something.

To be honest as a newb you'd probably BENEFIT from setting up now. That way in the next months you can figure out what you did wrong and fix it the second time. :)

Ive had a 75g reef before. Just getting into the higher end corals. Then once i get the time / spare $$$$$ im going to go big. Just want something until then.... you guys would miss your tank if you didnt have one for 2 years too wouldnt ya. ha

Dude...When I moved I spent over a year with rock in a tub...I know the itch.

I have it BADDDDDDDDDDD brothaman lol, i sit on here for HOURS a day reading and reading...... ahh. Hell im at work right now and im on here. lol

Ill prob end up putting it up and suffer when i move it. I figure with me and 2 of my buddies we can move it in no more then 3hrs. I just wanted some imput from some people who have done it before haha.

I did the same thing twice in two years with a 37g/15g sump, both times because of unplanned moves. The trouble of moving that size tank is more than made up for by the time between moves spent maintaining and enjoying the tank. Set it up, enjoy it.

But, in the time you have, I wouldn't get too set on having a tank full of SPS and rare corals.

i wouldnt say 3 hours for the move, there is a lot that you need to take your time with in a move, to be safe set aside much more time than that
