New tank with LED light

Very nice setup, Those dark blues are amazing. You should try emerald crabs for the bubble algae they have done a great job for me

ok rodney, awesome shots of awesome looking corals!!
no need to post shots in my thread asking about experience with the hyperion....
i am sold on the mitras!

rodney, in your estimation, what is the effective, useable spread of light from a mitra?
i mean, if you wanted to keep sps everywhere in your tank, maybe low light sps near the bottom and high light sps at the top, but still all sps, what is the area that one mitra could comfortably cover?
Im wondering because my next tank will be 51 inches long, 32 inches from back to front and 26 inches high.
it'll be strictly sps.
im not looking to just get away with enough light, i want to have light to spare..
i assume i would have to either run the mitras perpendicular to the tank to spread the light out from back to front, or use more and run them parallel.
im not sure if 3 mitras perpendicular to the tank or 4 of them, in two rows, running parallel to the tank would be better
what do you think?
thanks in advance!

this guy is so cute, follows whoever is in front of the tank...always has to have a sticky beak!

Thanks aqua digital... I'll be putting in an order soon.
Those latest photos answered my psycho questioning perfectly!
I'll probably go with 3 and mount them the same way as Rodney as my dimensions are almost exactly the same...
In another led light related thread, the discussion has shifted, lately, away from the awesomeness of the light and more towards dealing with coral colour changes.
I'm very encouraged to see that Rodney's corals continue to look absolutely perfect under the mitras...

Go for three Matt, gives you the ability to put corals where you want in the tank and not have to worry too much about placement

As someone who has seen Rods tank for a long time and seen the changes from T5 to illumina to T5 to GHL, I can honestly say that it's my belief his tank has never looked better. It may be early days, but seriously these little lights put out power and they are working really well thusfar on Rods Tank! On another note Rod, get some photos of the ventralis aha, I can see a few pink flashes on the edge of your LR! Will be sick when this tank turns into the 7.5!

Many thanks for posting the photos.

I know its only been 6 weeks, but compared to your T5's:

1.How would you rate the Mitras in terms of SPS colour?

2. How good is the coral flourescence under the hyperviolets? -either with the HV's on their own and in conjunction with the other channels?

Hi Sahin,

I am Rod's brother and a massive ATI T5 fan. When he put the vertex on the tank looked rubbish, but now with the GHL I was very suprised that the color was as good if not better than T5....I never thought i would say that. I am now looking to upgrade to the ATI LED hybrid.

I pulled down my 3yr old tank as I was doing renovations at home and got sick of the stand and wanted a new one. So the long planning stage took place in Jan 2011 to design this tank, I was going for a cabinet to match the rest of my furniture and to hide the ugly chiller.

Now for the other reason for changing tanks, ive had a few types of lights over my tanks and with all the hype about LED I thought id give it a go. So many different opinions on this light if it can or cant grow corals, colors and the like. Well I liked the low power, no need to change tubes (so the manufacturers claim 50k hours we will see), less heat, and fully programmable. So after alot of thought I decided to rip down my old tank, take frags and start all over again from the ground up to really see what these LEDs can do.

I have kept my birdnest which I grew from a frag and a few small SPS I have grown from frags. No wild colonies to really see how I can go with this system.

Now picking the fixture, I dont have a hood so a full pendant had to be the way to go...coming from the giesemann and ATI PM it had to be aesthetically pleasing...so Vertex Illumina 1200 it was. I wanted to do this right so coughed up alot of cash for this light as it best suited my needs.

So I invite you to join me on my journey with growing a SPS tank from frags under LED

This was the design I came up with, had ATI at the time lol

and this is how it turned out.

Im running a simple sump, with a skimmer and just rowaphos and carbo, CR for calcium/alk supplement.

Im still learning how to take photos but here are some unprocessed pics, looking really blue under the LEDs though. These shots were taken with 8-% white and 100% blue/RB on

Im really keen to see how LED works in my tank, ive had them for 4 months now.

Rod

Hi Rod, your tank and stand look awesome! is it possible to reveal how much they cost? I'm considering getting a similar one as yours.

can you share, how did you measure the wavelength ? any instrument to use?

this is the test rig i use to take light measurments

Just the one more Mitras reefmutt - might even try with just 3 at first see how it goes, ill be using my current aquascape just spaced out a bit

xme960 - in Aus i paid $2500 for the stand and $700 for tank. those pics are good memories...how good does the single illumina look over the tank compared to Mitras pods...shame the light didnt work out

Acronic - i wouldnt live without an auto feeder with my anthias, they love the pellets

Rod you forgot about the frame, which would have cost $3000

Hi Rodney, I just received mine today. Could you PM me your project on the Phoenix 14K setting? Does this works with new firmware? I also received another project of 14k from Michale and just wondering if the two settings are different. Thanks.
