New to mantis

Oh! And finnaly, the tank is a 25 gal. 30x12x16 instead of 30x12x18. For the decoration, I'll probably go with black sand, plenty of LR and macroalgea. Maybe some shroom and zoa if the water quality is good enough.
 
someone mentioned keeping a cleaning crew in the tank and letting him pick on it dont they kill for fun and they bury food if they are full
 
None of my three have ever buried food, I believe that is a characteristic of peacocks. As far as killing for fun, the only animals I have heard of doing that are dolphins, and those two lions in Africa that killed railroad workers in the 1800's. There was a movie made about them called The Ghost and the Darkness. I think mantises only kill to eat or for territorial reasons/defense. I'm sure Dr. Roy could give you a more accurate reply though on aggressive stomatopod behavior though. You have little choice with a clean up crew though. Most animals will be eaten that are for algae/detritus control. You could always get huge turbos but they will end up destroying more coral than a mantis would.
 
Cath, hooray! Share some ideas with me maybe! Are you going to plumb it with your 125g reef? That's exactly what I was going to do, except I'm using white sand (would have used black but my tahitian moon sand was from a freshwater aquarium and it was chock full of blackworms)

Maybe if I see that your tank looks good I'll restart with black sand :D What macro are you gonna use? I'm thinking of grape caulerpa, feather caulerpa, chaeto and red algaes...and coincidentally also zoos! I think blue zoos and red zoos look perfect in a macroalgae tank. Plus I save on the skimmer :D
 
No, I can't plumb it to my 125gal, the tank were so far one of each other. My new tang will divide my lounge and my dining room and will be visible on 3 faces.

For the macroalgea, I presently have cheato and red gracillaria at the store, so I'll go for it.(but personnaly, I think that cheato don't look nice!lol but it is really effective for water filtration)

I love caulerpa, they are really beautiful macro (the feather in particular) but since I've experimented sexual reproduction of it in one of my past tank, I'm not sure I want it again...come back home and find that my water was all green was not a think I want to experiment a second time...

For the zoa, we got a large variety of colors at the store (red, yellow, green, orange), so I'll probably go with all I can have. I'll try to post some pics this evening, when the tank will be install.;-) And for the black sand, here is a pics of the tank of a friend of mine. I think it look really good!

Haha! Maybe Hong kong is a bit far of Montreal(something like at the opposite side of the planet!lol), but I'll say it to he!lollolol Never know what can happens!lol (If you don't go to steal it, maybe I'll go!lol)

This red zoa are really nice, I've a look on them for many months now...but my friend had promised me a frag as soon as he can!:-)

So, my new acrylic tank is now at home. I'll probably start to fill it this evening and the set up will be ready to house my mantis wednesday or thursday.

Does mantis need water flow? I've a Tunze 6025 wich do nothing in my locker, maybe I can use it, at least for water oxygenation...Does 600gph is ok on a 30'' long tank or it will be too strong for a mantis?
 
Haha! Look strange to me to ask so many questions...I'm moderator on a Reef forum and work in a reef store so, usually, I did'nt ask, I answer!lol That's the proof than we never stop learning in the beautiful word of SW!;-)
 
It doesn't matter. NEVER do anything to your aquarium if she molts! Like even salinity changes, water top-offs, adding trace elements, food, disturbing her burrow, distracting her can lead to death.

Oh and provide lower lighting...high lighting can lead to shell disease.

NO lugol's needed. Mantis can be kind of sensitive to too much Iodine. They should get enough from just water changes.
600GPH IMO would be overkill. I don't think it would hurt the mantis, but a Tunze would be better suited to a reef tank.

I wouldn't be so concerned that I didn't keep up on topping off the tank. Its better to keep adding a little every day, than to let it swing way out from normal and then try and bring it back in line after the molt.
 
Ok, I'll check about a little maxijet...I've a bunch of pump who do nothing at home...In fact, I guess than just a little water movement is enough to oxygenate water...Am I right?
 
My little baby is now at home!:D He's doing fine and seems to like is new home. I'll show you pics as soon as I bring my cam at home.;-)

I am growing my macroalgae and looking for a P. ciliata now :D
