Hey, just PCS'd to Kadena. Looking to establish multiple tanks in the near future, but I'm completely lost as far as purchasing stuff locally here on okinawa. I need help! :)

I hit up japanupdate.com and bought a 55g/29g, just need a skimmer and some other things, plus aragonite and rock, then im set.

If you know of anyone selling stuff, or that sells frags, i'm all ears.

Thanks,
Lionel

sand, you can get that from the local DIY store. its like 200y for a bag. I used it along with a cup of sand from the beach.....I walked out at low tide. My sand is more than alive....

As for your skimmer and such....stateside. I get stuff from premium aquatics in about 5 days. Rock, we can talk about rock ;) but you can get that as well at low tide. You will find, having a tank in Okinawa is very cheap. ;)

Frags....dont worry. You'll get taken care of

I'm going to order a skimmer today, unless i can find one for cheap, used. I think i might go check out some of the local stores today as well.

Were you able to find the stores? There is a thread in here with them all listed, as well as directions.

couldnt find ACO. found ppm, though. just my kind of place, lots of frags :)
is there anywhere on island to get caribsea substrates? i am looking for the seaflor special grade aragonite.

thanks,
Lionel

Your going to have a hard time finding a 'certain' type of sand here. Just my experiences.

Like I mentioned, at the DIY stores, they have a bag of sand for around 200y. Its a large bag, and has a mixture of smashed shell and regular beach sand in the bag. Pretty moist also. Get some of that, give it a good wash, add it with a good handful of live sand from the ocean at low tide (try to get away from a public beach) and toss that in there...you have yourself a great sand bed.

You will find some things are very difficult to come across, and some things are really really easy to get.

I may just order some and take the hit on shipping. Is there anywhere on island to get a decent RO unit for less than ridiculous prices? :)
I'm still trying to decide if i want to buy a new protein skimmer or just wait it out on the used forum and get a good deal on one.

Well I bought an AquaC EV-150 used, with an eheim pump.
Gotta get my hands on a return pump for the 29g sump now, as well as a few more powerheads I think.

The Kadena BX has a RO unit for $168 I believe. If that doesnt do the trick, Melve has some systems on his site, and he has told me he would ship this way.

is the PPM stuff NSW or synthetic? does anyone know what the calcium levels are in the stuff?

I suppose if it isnt too far from 400 i can look into snatching up a reactor.. I wonder if the fire department can fill CO2 tanks ;)

im not sure what or how they do water, but I assume its NSW. My tank goes nuts over it. The shop, aqua culture okinawa has a NSW well, and the fish lady also has NSW that is very good.

Just my opinion, you now live in an area that has the some of the best reefs in the world, littlerly miles from you. I cant think of any reason not to use the NSW. I get 15g for 1200y at ppm or I can get 15g for around 5-600y (depending on the ladys mood) at the fish lady. I have never ever had any problems with either, and my tank thrives like no other. I have pretty much walked away from my tank for about a month and its still thriving. Almost to the point where I am scared to get my hands back into it.
Why should I spend way more than that on artifical salt and worry about levels and everything else that goes with making my own water. Im takin advantage of this now...while im here. ;) The NSW is great.

Yeah, but where is the water coming from? Unless they are going pretty far from shore to get it, my main concern is pollution from runoff, especially with all of the small farming setups ive seen.

Calcium and trace elements can be controlled, to an extent. I'm just weighing my options :)

I'll probably try out the NSW for now, but I'm going to stay vigilant with testing...

Myself and Mike (dastank), both have been running NSW for over a year. Been monitoring it, and like I said....I can't find one reason not to use NSW. Why should I spend money on salt, a RO unit and everything else that goes with it when we have perfectly fine NSW at my convinence. Myself and a few others use tap water for top off as well...never have any problems. Been doing it over a year now...

To be honest, we find most and the healthiest coral at run-offs....we see a run-off and hop in right there to check out the coral. :)

I'm gonna be ready for rock by the middle of next week. Where do you recommend to procure some? :)
if there's some livestock involved as well, that's even better. I'd like to get some sand & critters to jumpstart everything as well.

Petbox had the natures ocean aragonite, i picked up 60 pounds of that, as well as about 25 pounds of the "coral sand" substrate.

so far, so good
thanks for all of the help and info guys, its appreciated :D

Rock....i'd suggest buying some decent snorkel gear instead :) If you really wanna buy it, aqua culture okinawa has huge tubs of very large rock....but its not very natural looking...

As for some critters....it appears low tide is around 5 right now (I havent checked the tide tables lately)...head out with a bucket and walk out as far as you can and grab a good handful or two. Put some water overtop of it also.
