The T5's produce about the same amount of light as a VHO but they're only 5/8" diameter vs 12/8" diameter of VHO's. Therefore you can fit a lot more into a small space. They also consume less electricity. When you combine T5's with an individual parabolic reflector, that's where the intensity comes in. Much more light actually makes it into the tank.

A 54 watt T5 with a reflector will put out ABOUT 10% more light than a 110 watt VHO. Since the 54 watt T5 is shorter than the 6' VHO, the light it puts out should be more intense over the shorter area.
