Anyone have the newer Odyssea

48" 760W Metal Halide System (Electronic Version) light ?

I know a guy that has four of their pc lights and all has been good .

I know they had problems when first getting into this hobby , but now they are tied with Coralife some how and seems the new versions are better . I would like to up grade to metal halide for at least two of my tanks . But I`m home from work on a back injury and $ isn`t coming in as good . I`d like to buy the Coralife Aqualight Pro light but can`t afford $900 at the moment . Just looking for opinions from people that have actually used the newer lights from Odyssea .

I`ve been doing a lot of reading from many forums and seems to be an equal bad and good feedback . Even if they have crappy bulbs and ballasts , still cheaper with replacing the bulbs and ballasts . But I just learned they are not UL listed and anything that is not UL listed and causes a fire , the damage will not be covered by my insurance .

Guess , I`ll just go for another Coralife pc for now .

I like mine so far. only have been up and running for a month, but so far so good!

Good to hear ! I`m just a little worried since no insurance company will cover if the light was to cause any fire or electrical issues . I know the new models are better , but not sure I`m willing to take that risk . I sent Aquatraders an email and see if they respond .

Dawman
then you are in the wrong hobby, reefkeeping is not UL listed....

just because you see the UL sticker, it don't mean jack, I seen very expensive equipment that goes on fire and it had the NAMA and UL sitckers... and it don't mean is bad, also all the bad rep Odyssea had on the first 2 versions has improved, and FYI for all:

the coralife fixture is the same as the new Odyssea, actually the ballast are better on the Odyssea, beacuse they are electronic, and produce way less heat, consume way less power (that's why we all replaced the ballast) adn the coralife are magnetic 2 part system, so the ignitor is on its own separate box, and did i mention that they BURN really fast... I know 2 LFS that had them on display, and both the ballst whent PUFF!!! and they are UL listed

oh, and Dawman... please read the entire thread, we all discuss the UL paranoia

unless you work for UL, you should not worry about it, see the items that need certification by UL labs, get a revision submited to them, they either pass it or make recomedations on things that need change, but we all know once they pass, the MFG are not going to spend more $ on every revision they make, and every revision has changes, not to make it better, but to make it cheaper for them.

To be honest, i'm not so sure that the odyssea ballast is better. In fact, the odyssea ballast is garbage IMO. But that's a topic for another thread ;) ;)

I've had mine for a few months now and I'm very happy with the fixture. i did replace the ballasts with Coralvue and have no concerns about UL, safety issues. I would say go for it....Oh yeah, Miata is the reason I bought my light.

BTW , I have not seen anyone that had problems with the electronic ballast, everyone I read their post have them and they still work, only one person had one that went bad, and they are not that bad, just get the right bulb on them, just like the bulbs, once you get a good ballast, they are actually good, did i mention, the 20k Odyssea bulb actually looks better than some others I seen when paired w/CoralVue ballst, and the 15k Odyssea is really crisp white w/just a hint of blue.

and if you have a ballast of the new fixtures, you might be able to use it for either a 150, 175 or 250 SE for a cheap frag tank with just a mogul socket and some cheap reflector, they are perfect! low power consumption, no noise, low heat emmision, and cheap!

great for DIY

this is my tank with the coralvue ballast and the Odyssea 20k bulbs

have a gallon of RO/DI water ready

PS . make sure the TDS is 000, or else :fun2:

I`m in the wrong hobby ? Guess I`ve been wasting time and money for the past 20 years .

I know the UL tag doesn`t mean crap , but it does to any insurance company , especially for previous history of problems . This is not the only reason . I`ve always be cautious about their lights and has kept me from buying them .

Doesn`t matter now anyway , I found a great deal for an Aqualight Pro and picking it up tuesday .

I came on here to ask people that HAVE them to chime in . Not to hear all the other smart a$$ crap . Which seems to happen a lot on RC .
