Wow, no one wrote to yell at me in 7 hours.
Waterkeeper must be sleeping and the Capn must be ignoring me. (he is a teacher)
Waterkeeper is, well, a guy who keeps water.

sorry Paul---I had to take a break also

What you are saying is so true--I can't argue with that---as you are aware I am currently a labour market reentry trainer for injured workers---not a day goes by when the above isnt't brought up and discussed.

Try this The Care and Feeding of Sea Monkey's to get a handle on these darling little water fleas. ;)

Thanks for the link, but I'm good. I've raised them at home and in the lab before. First I want to talk to one of my friends though. He's kept several of these fish alive for 5 years and I know he doesn't hatch Artemia nor does he ever feed baby Artemia in any form.

hi, read the lighting article from the newbie corner, awesome stuff! thank you!

now my question: i have a 150 mh (10000k) + 2x24w T5 (20000k) pendant. the fixture is 24 inches long. i want to have a sofitie+lps tank. i want to have my tank custom made. which dimensions (L*W*H) would you suggest to have it made in? i do not have any aesthetic requirements, i just want the technically optimal balance of characteristics, a lighting/tank size combination that suits my intended animals, well lit bottom, no dark edges, good gas exchange, room for aquascaping, swimming place... obviously something nanoish

Or do you know any interesting articles/threads about figuring out the ideal tank dimensions considering one's lighting system and tank purpose?

help would be appreciated. hope i asked at the right spot and didn't abuse the thread.

This thread is abused so much I get letters from the Battered Aquatic ReeferKeeper's Society (BATS) all the time. :D

Sounds like you are not talking a giant tank. The rule of thumb is to keep it no longer than the hood and on the shallow side., two feet or under. It is better to have a bigger front to back width than a deep narrow tank. If you make it 20" in width it probably would be fine, say 28" long by 20' wide by 24" tall. A shade under 60 gallons.

"Batty" eh---I can see how one could go figure.;)

We have a support in Canada for battered reefers--its called

"Labatts":D

thank you very much, i'll just run with that then. since i'm european i'll make it 70cm*50cm*60cm, that would be 210 litres. fairly big in comparison to what i expected to hear, but i like that.

Hey Keeper
Is it inadvisable to use translucent plastic containers for RO/DI and mixed saltwater due to possible algae growth. I was thinking of these for the purpose Storage barrel
Thanks

due to ro/di water having zip nitrates and phosphates in it--the food for algae I would think that those containers would be fine.

I agree Scott, it shouldn't be a problem but for very long term storage an opaque might be better. I'm talking two months or more here, in a brightly illuminated area.

I bet you had a hard time pulling all those corks to get 50 gallons of Merlot into that tank :p :p :p :p
These tanks are somewhat opaque (you can only see the water level) and the RO/DI water and saltwater will only be in there for a short time.

Actually it's easy, we crushed 70 cases of grapes and got about 150 gallons of wine.
Now we have to put corks "in" all those bottles

I use a Rubbermaid Brute garbage can. Even have a castor base under it since I have to mix it in a separate room from the aquarium. Water change time I just roll the barrel out to the tank, drop a power head with some hose on it into the barrel and refill the tank. :)

I store RO for top offs in 6-1/2 gal blue water jugs. No problems yet.
