next meeting?

This is how to solve

This is how to solve

This goes way back before we are NPO and asked the club to get credit for stuff done under their name. I tried to work around it and everytime I tried something new there was a reason not to help. I asked for the club to help with some salt and that did not work, I asked the club to help and I will provide reciept and that did not work, I asked club to send stuff to the school directly and that did not work, I was asked to provide a contact from the school and the I was told is not going to work because of NPO. If they don't work why are you asking me to do so. Many helped and tried their best but it was more individuals than NCPARS and many voted but nothing went through.
I don't need a check or money to go to me (remember this statement) and I have spent more money than few buckets I was asking and all I wanted is for NCPARS to be part of what this club started for.

I don't care if money goes straight to reefcentral for example which is the reason we are a club. Here is my suggestion which will resolve the whole talk about me asking for money.
Spend some money and send RC a check for all the services they have provided us and I and others will be happy.
those who ask questions about why help a good cause they need to think about it twice and I know for sure they did not mean it this way.

Help RC to keep this service and show them our appreciation and this is by itself is helping education and to prove to those who say we don't have to help educate PA that we can help educate the world.

RC thread

I have suggested here and see what happens and I have suggested in that thread and you will see that we will do it and not just talk. There are alot of good ideas where to spend members money but who is the one who will do it and stop using excuses.

Write a check to Reefcentral and support them and I'm in BOD and signed the papers so this is my vote. Who else will vote for this in BOD or members.

Having a combined meeting with REEFNEST where there will be new reefers there is a great idea and we are working on it and here is another way to show your support that will help us and when I say us I mean (REEFNEST and NCPARS).

REEFCENTRAL SUPPORT IDEA

REEFCENTRAL SUPPORT IDEA

Here is a way that I suggest and is that the club buys 10 or more or so of Support RC and do a drawing to pass to some members. I'm sure REEFCENTRAL staff will be more than happy to arrange this. Here is another idea ..
attend next meeting and your membership dues will go toward REEFCENTRAL or any other suggestions like that. If some don't think RC deserves any support then find another educational activity to support. We do need to do more than just two swaps and is to get involve more with education and let those who want to do the job do it and that's what I'm talking about.

i'm a little confused? why must we do these educational things, is it because of our status a a club? or is it just what the BOD feels is right? what i mean is, this hobby takes so much $ that i'd like it if members $ helped other members much more than a school where i have to drive 3 hours to get to.
tI have no problem paying dues and sometimes donations, but would like that $ to help my fellow NCPARS members.
thanks - matt

I figured you were missing something. This club was founded to help educate people and not just for frag swaps. It was founded to help us share with each other. It was sponsored by many companies because we were involved with schools. We had a meeting at one of the schools (PSU) and that helped us alot and it is our duty to help educational institutions or any other way to educate community. Good clubs educate members and public. This club was founded three hours from where you at. If you have a school in your area that is closer to you and students there need any help to learn about reef aquarium I think we all should try to help. Some of the money is helping educate members by hosting meetings, speakers but what else a good club can do. We work to educate outside our community. If we close doors and not let everybody know who we are, educate each other, not having more meeting, not to be part of our region then this club like any other club's woul've been nowhere and this woul'dve been a club in my house and by myself and I decided to share and get out to let others know we have a meeting and meetings started to grow because of that. Educating kids in the school is a way to pass our knowledge to them and maybe we can get more people involve to help protect ocean by educating them. I have a student and teacher in one of the schools who discuss reef tank and he using it as part of his school work. He did not just come to a pet store, picked up fish, tank and took it home. There will be more and with our rate we have at least one person every week interested in learning about reef aquarium and this happened because somebody showed them is more than just a fish tank.

thats a good point matt...even though i am not a member i still have opinions of what i think would be good for others and myself...this is how i see it....everytime i turn the TV on i see a young girl in africa starving to death...what do i do, do i say screw that little girl, let her die from starvation, or do i send donations to help, i dont evn care if she actually gets it to tell you the truth, but deep down inside i have filled that little gap knowing that my 100$ made just that more of a little difference...and its the same way with donations to schools...when i grew up i couldnt play any instruments or go on field trips, my parents didnt have the money to pay for these extras...i pretty much suffered the childhood experiences...b/c people like you dont wanna help...im ashamed to even be reading these excerpts these forums...im not even a member and i see how these are going here...ya know other clubs dont mention this kinda of bashful forums at all...i like other clubs...everyone is tryin to help the newbies and also tryin to make a difference....can you think what movie this came..."think of an idea, to try and chaznge the world, then put it into action"...i guess there are only a few good people left in this world...

people like me? you don't know me! you've never even met me!
i was under impression that this was going to school tanks and Mo speaking to the kids about tanks. i don't know what he actually does for them or what the $ does, i guess.
But don't make ***-umptions.

**SHOW me one post where i bashed even a little? Thank You!

i am here to help as i've offered in this thread and am just looking to be kept in the loop and that more meetings be considered.

Those of you that have posted must keep in mind that we are, even though it may sound like bashing, finally communicating with each other. We are finally getting some answers, we are kind of moving forward. I don't mean to bash and I know my brain takes me places and I write it down when sometimes I shouldn't. Fizz and I are still communicating, I have expressed my love of the hobby and we share that, but still we have to get past money to get to what is important. Forget about money right now, forget all the B.S. that has happened. We need to finally decide when and where and what time we are having the swap and elections. It is critical to the survival of this club and our primary goal. Read the Moto, or mission statement on the www.ncpars.org site. Its at the top of the page. We are here to educate, learn from each other, and help this hobby move smoothly into the future by protecting it as we enjoy it. Mo has a great point, why enjoy this hobby if you are not going to help protect it as well. Thats stupid. It really is. Why be interested in reefs and keeping them when in the near future they may not exist? Captive raising, breeding, protection, education, and getting people involved is the way to go! Mo is just asking for help, not alot of help, but help and it what he wants is just a little more than he has been getting. He just hits a brick wall everytime he asks. Fizz I know how fed up you are, and I know that you said something like you feel that you sometimes are talking to walls, well you are not the only one. I know there are many of you that have made suggestions and they just get shot down or not answered. We also need to really thank a few people here. I want you all to realize that even though this is all happening there is someone who has continued to work through it. Brad and his family have worked countless hours on this club and for the most part not being recognized for it. He feels ashamed I know it. I am almost sure that he feels that way. You the club, need to commend such a great member because without him we wouldn't be so lucky to have so much money in the bank. He has put countless hours into donations, swap organization, and without any second thought he has done this because he believes in something. Brad help me out here. Do you have a passion for reefkeeping? I think so your slogan is reef addict. Do you believe in helping the hobby? I think so, your actions show it! Brad has been wonderful for the club and even though he has hit some road blocks he has kept on going. He is what this club is all about, he is just like Mo, a DO'ER! I am also a do'er, I have been in this hobby along time, still learning like the rest of you, but wanting to make a difference because it is the right thing to do and it will benefit all hobbyists around the world. Even our little part of helping will make the difference.
In conclusion, we need to move on, we need to change things, and we need to do it in a quick and effecient manner!

thanks,

Rick

P.S. I am running for office in the elections, to help make that change!!!

Actually...ALL of the board members have been putting a lot into this club..not all at the same time, but at certain times. A lot of the time you do not SEE what they do, so you think they aren't doing anything. That PSU event we had last year? Totally organized by the PSU folks..I just lugged my crap along for them to use. NPO? Lots of paper work....the list goes on. Brad does a lot of stuff that you see..I won't diss his efforts at all...I'm just saying Brad does know who does and who doesn't do work for this club. What else can I do but say Thank You. Not everybody is going to bring in money/donations for the club in large volumes, that doesn't mean their efforts are any less important.

Anyway...here's the latest....

As for the "I Support RC" idea....Right now the only way I know to add the "I Support RC" is to setup a subscription through a credit card or paypal on the account that receives it. Oddly enough I just did it yesterday....

So I sent an email to JohnL (one of the people in charge of it) to see if we could do either some kind of group donate, or maybe set one person a month up with a free year of the "I support" features. We'll see what he says. We can discuss it on the 17th to see if others think it's a good idea...or in here..whatever. :)

We're also still looking to possibly merging the swaps. If Mo is game, we can see what we can do. We're going to try to meet in person someplace this weekend if our schedules can handle it.

I also have Sanjay seeing if there is any chance of a speaker at this short notice. He has somebody in mind. I hate to mention names, not because it's a secret, but because I don't like saying something I'm not sure will happen. Especially if he hasn't gotten ahold of the person yet.

For those of you going to the Calfo event tonight. JonK will be giving out 3 of Calfo's books to random attendees (they retail at $33 each). 2 of the coral prop books, and 1 of his invert books. We bought them from Todd with NCPARS funds...well...right now I bought them but NCPARS will pay me back eventually. :) Good luck winning one..I'm not sure what John has planned for doing it, I'm assuming he'll work something out with Todd.

Since I know people are actually reading this forum again, I'll try to post updates as we go..so check for OTHER threads, not just this one. I would be more than happy to start some membership dialogs on topics like the "I support RC" idea, but we need to hear both the "yays" and the "nays"..and not just read it and not respond. Alot of times people don't want to respond because they're afraid of getting involved. In the past I've started lots of threads that just never got any response from membership, and I'm not talking about anything monumental. You have to look at it from our (the BOD's) perspective...You say we don't communicate...We say nobody's paying attention! If you read a thread and don't say anything we have no idea that you read it. And you can't use the "read counts" because that gets skewed quickly. Take my "General Membership Meeting" thread...you guys asked for it..it has 23 "views" but not one "Sounds good...I'll be there" or "I can't make it this time, let us know what happens" or "I'm having trouble with AIM"...not a SINGLE reply..so now it's falling off the bottom of the list!!! That to me tells me that you just aren't interested in it or even worse, not paying attention to it and don't care! ..that's the brick wall thing I was talking about Ricky. :)

The more YOU (collectively) use the forums the more WE can talk to you about things. And yes..I know people have been asking about our next swap and we have been dragging our feet on it...too many people that need to make the decisions that have too much going on in their lives. I tried to hold a BOD meeting, but it's tough to get everybody into one room..even when it's virtual. But we're talking again now in here so that's good.

That's all for now...I have to get some work done.

thats nice to hear rickyfins about this not bashing, its just progress...but me debating on whether to become a member kinda makes me shun away from this whole ncpars totally, i mean i like debate, i like confusion on good terms, but in the end like you sayin it will come together.....hopefully...and eagles guy, sry to make it pin you, but if your interested in seeing some of the projects that mo spends his own money on, ill link a forum or heres the reefnest forum, there many projects he does...kinda cool seeing the kids faces, check out our free monthly meetings...if we didnt work together we wouldnt have them either...mo was forkin out his families money to make sure we had refreshments and a meeting place and things to give away....theres many pics in here...come check out his link...you will find many forums mo is involved in.....tell you the truth i think its too much for one person, and i have offered my services, but i dont think he wants to see me spend all my money on something, he would rather do it for us...and im speaking for all of us at reefnest ....

Good to see some dialog taking place... its all part of growing pains. Keeping all personal issues aside, I think the BOD has done a good job getting a stong financial foundation for whatever the club may decided to do in the future. Not only that, there have been enough mechanisms put into place so that the club does not benefit one person or a small group of people. All this takes time, and its not a full time commitment for anyone.

While education is one of the tenets of the culb... it does not define education. There are a lot of forms of education occuring and education just does not mean funding one person's pet project. The BOD has spent considerable time in comming with a process to request money for educational/shool projects so that it stays clean and accessible to everyone in the club, not just Mo.

Further, lets dispel the myth that Mo is the only one doing any educational activities. There is education occuring at all levels. While setting up your tank in a school may count for education, as it should become obvious that is not sustainable in the long run unless the school takes ownership.

We as the BOD have to keep any money donation clean and is within the legal definitions and accountability.

The process is now in place for requesting money for school projects, as long as one is willing to follow the process and provide full accounatbility with acknowledgement from the recipeints.

Should I reuquest money from the club so that we can support the tank at Penn State ? Is that not education, when thousands of people walk by it everyday and students help take care of the tank. Should I request money to set up a tank so I can teach my kids and friends in the neighborhood about reefs ? You get my point... we need well established rules.

Given that I have not been able to spend as much time as I anticipated, I am perfectly willing to step down from the BOD.

sanjay.

Sanjay, you know thats not where I am going. I am informed because I seek information. I know how busy you are, but your knowledge is power. You are intellegent and can make good decisions. I know what you have done behind the scenes, I am not asking you to step down, not at all. I am just trying to push, push for change, push for decisions, time is of the essence! This is not all about Mo and his cause. It is the whole, all activity, and the future of the club.

thanks,

Rick

Fizz, great move to contact John and all that you are trying to do to make everybody understand your point, RC support is a suggestion and if you are waiting for replies then you got my yay and you know I'm always up to a good act.

Murph72, all good points. I'm sure we are all as busy as you, I know I am. It just makes it frustrating because we also want to do more, but many of us are putting as much time as we can/want in, and it's frustrating to then get a minimal response when we call for volunteers and more board members. So I just hope that everyone does offer ideas about what we can do, and then contributes as they can, particularly those who have been active about voicing the need to do more.

To reiterate what Kevin and others have said, the people who have given time have given a lot. I've only been involved for 1 1/2 years, Mo did a lot at the beginning for the first swap since I was involved, Brad has done a lot getting donations and setting up raffles, Mal has done a TON of work on bylaws, NPO and incorporation [which, in response to one other note, a number of companies DID tell us they valued, perhaps it depends who you talk to, and ad hominem attacks on him are totally uncalled for], Sanjay has done all the work getting speakers, Kevin has set up publicity events and hosted an informal get together at his house, and various people have done a lot of work setting up the swaps. Believe me, a lot of things feed into the swap going well for 5 hours!

We had a membership meeting at the Fall 2004 swap at which we discussed our plans with everyone, but then we didn't at the last 2 swaps. Partly that was because at the State College swap, we didn't have a good room for it (and that was partly becaue we had to change the location with short notice because the people at the first place turned out to be less than helpful), and at the last one, it was because we ran out of time. It's hard to have people come to a swap for 4 hours and then have a meeting. But I guess we'll need to.

In the past post I have said few times that I personally don't care where the club spends money in education so it does not have to be any school project. I have said for example spend it on anything else and few post back I said (help educational institutions or any other way to educate community). There is nothing wrong with doing something for PSU, Lycoming College, Penn College etc, but most of those colleges and universities have better budget for aquariums than high schools, middle schools, etc. I don't mind helping PSU with anything. All that it is we need to move a little more than just two swaps, other things in the middle can be done but like said that who will do it. I know everybody is busy with family, work, life and reefkeeping is a hobby that is not a major thing. There are who want to do the job so let them do it and more power to them and we should help them.
," NCPARS is the best organized club around ". I heard that at something fishy ," . What makes us good that we are here discussing with everybody and taking openions to make it better. I was gone for over 9 hours yesterday to meet with Fizz at TFP and we both took this out of spending time with family but I think we discussed few important points that needed to be discussed and had good suggestions that we will be letting everybody know about. This is two Yay's and it will have to to through the rest before final Yay is said.

I've submitted the "plan" for the upcoming swap for the board's approval after the highly productive multi-hour sit down Mo and I had yesterday. It will be a financial loss for NCPARS but all our bills are paid and we're ahead for now so we can afford a loss to help rejuvenate the club and help reefnest out as well without violating our bylaws or tax laws. If the plan is approved by the board..which BTW only has one yay since contrary to popular belief..I don't vote except to break a tie...We'll post the "plan" in our Forum..and Mo will probably do the same in his.

I'm also looking into a table at TFP at their April event. Mo..I don't know if reefnest has contacted them or not, but since you didn't mention it yesterday I included your org on the email to TFP since I have a contact there already. If all this goes through, it will be a good opportunity to promote the clubs and the swap. If you're already there, let me know so I can tell TFP to ignore that part of my email. :) I actually requested 2 tables..which we had before (right by the fishroom). It may be too late though, I don't know.

I know folks would like to know more, but I really don't think it's a good idea to post more until we're all on the same page. If I post something here, and it changes a little, people may miss the change and then complain that it's not what we said we'd do...been there..done that...nothing serious, but I want to avoid the miscommunication which is almost as bad as no communication.

We're moving now! :)

--Fizz
