Did I miss something in the thread. Why are you going backwards?
Lol. I gave the Vortechs a chance and they are just not for me. I've been running a single MP40 for about a year on my old tank and upgraded to a second for my new tank. There are a couple of reasons I'm switching.
- Impossible to perfectly align the wet and dry sides.
(Deal Breaker) These things will always be slightly out of balance and have wobble. It is such a pain trying to move these things around the tank and 'tune' them. Cleaning the wetsides becomes a dreaded task.
- The dryside sticks out a little to far on the outside of the tank. This is a problem for me b/c one of the sides of my tank is right next to a doorway. I don't want to have to worry about accidentally knocking into it or having a kid pull on it.
- Too noisy.
(Deal Breaker) The tank is in my bedroom and I'm sick of hearing the constant whirr of the motors. Nutrient export mode is unbearable. My tank is virtually silent with the exception of my MP40's.
- Not enough flow.
(Deal Breaker) I thought twin MP40's would be enough flow for my tank, but I am actually pretty disappointed. I can barely generate a wave in a 6' tank and at full blast there is only moderate flow. I know there are MP60's, but I'm really not interested in the vortech line at this point in time. Two MP40's = 6400 GPH. Two 6255's = 9600GPH. Yes I know 6255's cost more so this is not really a fair comparison.
- WXM is a pain in the butt. My apex is great and easy to update, but the WXM is really just a pain to deal with. Anyone who has ever tried to upgrade a WXM or vortech knows, it is a process. So much easier to to just plug the powerheads into a variable speed port!
The only flaw I see with the Tunze is that is may be considered unsightly, but that is not a big deal to me. Also they need their own controller, but if you already have an Apex you are set.
