Night viewing

I like taking a flashlight in the morning and seeing what is roaming around the tank while its still dark.
I hate bothering the sleeping fish and would like to know if there is a special lens you put over your flashlight or some type of light that wont bother the fish.

Thanks for any assist you can provide.

I heard that red light doesn't bother the fish.

I stretch a red balloon over my flashlight when I want to checkout pods and other critters at night. It prevents them from running away and hiding.

I use a red filter on my headlamp when I'm Striped Bass fishing at night so I don't spook them when I'm fishing the surf. I think it would be the same for fish in an aquarium.

yup, red light works. i use one to check on things a couple of hours after lights out. it's the best time to see the brittle starfish. :)

I bought a little LED flashlight from HD that has both white and red emitters works like a charm and cost all of $10

My inverts don't notice the red light at all. It's like they can't see it. I'm not sure but I think some fish might be able to see it. Like if I shine it right at my chalk bass he'll scoot a little further into his cave, but not necessarily wake all the way up. Maybe it's diff by species, where some don't need to see red, but some do. Or maybe just my imagination. It doesn't really matter since the fish are pretty much all sleeping at night anyway.

I use an astronomy flashlight app for my phone
