Nine peppermint angels!!!!

It's interesting to read this thread. Half the retailers or importers who claim to be bringing peppermints into the US I've never even spoken to. It seems as if everyone is trying to find a buyer and then worry about seeing whether they can actually get a fish later. The only person that will definately be getting one of these is humaguy. There will be a few more avaliable but the number is extremely limited.

Thanks RK...was holding my breath...and again, thank you, thank you, thank you...

I have a lot of respect for what you are doing, I really do, but if you are selling directly to hobbyists, how can you expect an importer to buy your fish, this fish still need to change one more hand before getting to the hobbyist (???).

I don't think he needs an importer for this species in particular.

as long as he/his team is the lone player,it wouldn't be a problem....nobody is even in the horizon to offer these fishes or acquired his level of credibility in the business of deep sea fishes...his biggest customers are in Japan where i believe he will go through the usual procedure always....

he perhaps wholesale it in the range of $10000-12000....that includes his expenses of the expedition and other payouts...while retailers keep almost same amount of profit just holding and selling it...i guess it is same for most fishes, but the sum here is astounding...you can't blame him for wanting a bigger share for once..

Hmmm... do you remember what happened here to Steve Robinson when he sold a Clarion to a hobbyist from here?
Do you remember what Dr.Foster the owner of Live Aquaria did on these forums about it?
I guess Steve could fit your criteria , he was a lone player for Clarions back then.

Based on what?
It appears that this man has taken a risk to catch a few fish that can make him a 'few' dollars... If he could catch 10 a day or a week or even a month, he might need help moving them, but for now it appears that he has 'hit the jackpot' and I say 'good for him'!

I agree with you!

I just didn't understand the hidden , or not so hidden complain in Rufus' words towards importers/retailers , what would you expect them to do?

Of course they will try to get a buyer first and then try to buy it from Rufus.

Trust me, if you'd sell direct to hobbyists in Japan, Koji would have done the same.

I know what i say might not sound popular to you guys, but hey, think about it.

no....$2000 fish has waaaay more buyers than $20000 fish..it's penetration in the market is far deeper..wholesellers have reason to upset....
by the way Steve hold the license to catch it,no special ability....

Steve was the only one who had legal Clarions for many years back then.

Again, Rufus can do whatever he likes, he risks his life to go so deep and get those fish, he can even go to hobbyist place and acclimate the fish himself and charge for it.
I have no problem with that.

I just do not understand why he complains that importers and retailers are trying to sell the fish first and then try to get it.

i think you got it wrong...
if the retailers don't have any connection with rufus, they shouldn't try to find a customer first but rather try to enquire to him directly about availability first...that is what i got from Rufus's word...
they may well take some advance money from the prospective buyers and then when no fish can be delivered, well lay the blame to him..

this is too good of a thread to let these things side track it guys :)

the Holy Grail of Reefing has been caught, and offered to reefers. lets not side track :)

Rufus, Would you share with us more of your tails of getting down to 400 ft dept and your journey there and back, how long does the dive take ? how long does it take for you to resurface ? how about the fish ? did you encounter any other odd creatures ?

The customers who would purchase a fish at this price point is not your average customer. So the 'retailers', who are calling customers to offer this fish, and convincing them to buy the fish, probably asking for a deposit to fund the purchase. Then are turning around and contacting the collector, demanding that they get a fish that they have now sold, to a difficult client, with whom they have no previous relationship with - It's clearly understandable how those conversations might go.

On a different not, now that Rufus has posted on this thread. 1) Congratulations !
2) I am curious, with this quantity available (10+), how long did it take to collect this many fish? Have some of these been in your captivity for a long time while you continued to collect more?

Dave B

I hope Wayne will pay not 20k for it not even 15k.
Its too risky, I know Rufus go to great risk to collect this holy grail but 20k is obscene
