not the most cost effective greenhouse you ever heard of

We will dig out the area for the 1000gal. tanks by hand. The dirt will be held back by way of landscaping block. In other words the 1000 gallon tanks will be subject to gh temps as well as below ground level and sitting on cold ground. We will stop sunlight from entering the storage area's to attempt to keep them cooler than actual air temps

Sounds like a good temperature buffer plan. Does this person have a well on the property? If there is a well, and no issues with waste water, you could run plumbing through the vats as additional cooling if required.

I'm one step ahead of you Chris as we already plan to use geothermal coils inside the 1000gallon tanks each with its own seperate circulation system. The loops will turn on when the temp in the vat goes above a set point;) . This fist year we will not be puting any sensitive corals in as the system needs about a year to cycle as I found that out the first go round . Hopefully we will work out the cooling bugs in that time frame. If the first idae don't work we'll try something else;)

Looking forward to seeing this work out for you guys. I was thinking of using the usual Geothermal method but for obvious reasons this would be far more applicable in coral culturing.

snow storm

snow storm

1 to 3" of snow in a place that rarley has that . Heck our averages dont go below freezing. Ive covered all my sensitive vegitation but we shall see:confused:

Thanks Chris it feels good to be back . Yes we got about three inches of snow. I sure hope that people that dont need to drive anywhere just stay home. I gotta work and dont want to dodge idiots the whole way there:rolleyes:

Glad to see you back in the game :D, although a couple of months barely qualifies as taking time off :P.

Before you go too far with the storage tank geothermal idea give me a call. I have been doing some heavy duty research on exactly that for my expansion plans (hopefully starting this year) and the results were not at all what I was expecting. You wouldn't believe how much volume it takes just to make up for the gain from partial sunlight for 8 hours, and that doesn't even take into account the ambient temp.

P.s. I have 5 inches of snow sitting on top of the greenhouse yesterday and none of it is melting. It was complete darkness inside :(

redox: We got a snow flurry here then it went away :D

Hoping y'all are doing alright with the weather! I heard that NC gov kinda freaked out with the snow as it was unexpected.

raaden: Long time how're you holdin' out?

raaden... if you've got the double layer poly (and from what i remember, you do) you can deflate the poly so the outside layer rests onto the inside layer, and the snow will melt off.

Electrobes, I have been holding out pretty well. It has been so long since my last disaster I am starting to get creative again. My biggest issue is lately has been sales.
I am hoping to fix that by starting to look for regional account reps to do that stuff for me. I am pretty sure once I lick the sales end of things I will be in the short stuff.

Rick, I hadn't thought of that but it worked great (thankfully because we didn't even get to 32 today). The snow we got the first year it was up just slid off, but with the shade cloth on it that didn't happen this time.

Redox- Have you taken any par reading's withe those poly panels? I know you mentioned using shade cloth in the summer is it necessary?

hello reefkeeper I only used the shade cloth in the first few seasons .Once I added the chiller I did away with it. It was mainly to keep the heat down.

yes I think they are. When every I added wild corals fresh from the reef the corals never had to adjust they just kept on growing. But when adding corals from someones aquarium I had to acclimated them for a few weeks.

Wow after reading all 32 pages I feel like I've just read a novel. Some really good information.

This new build looks very interesting, how about starting a new thread for it?

Dave came over to night and was just hanging around he always talks about your tanks and he showed me your Thread all i can say is awesome.
it is funny to see stuff from the 75g in the vatts was wondering if you had any update shots of the candy cane coral i gave him that coral as a singel head and saw a pic of it in the thread.
I am trying to get him back in but he is draging his feet and doesnt want to put out money right now.
He will come around.
i would love to come over and look at your set up :eek1: maybe dave and i can make the trip.
thank you for your GREAT info.
