Redox...awesome setup !!

I just spent hours reading the entire thread...I'm in the process of setting up a 30g frag grow out tank to attach to my main system and this obviously makes that look pretty small !!

One question...I know in the sea, coral reefs are provided natural sunlight, but the massive amount of water flow and change helps prevent unwanted algae. At home, its a "no-no" to place a tank near a window because of the un wanted algae growth from sunlight.....with all that, how do you keep things in check in the greenhouse? wouldnt that be considered closer to a tank near a window, than the ocean??

just wondering

I'll take a quick stab at that one....

Algea do not grow from sunlight alone...they grow from nutrients in the water, in combination with a light source. If you keep a relatively nutrient poor system, you will not have algea problems. That being said...even the natural reefs would be overgrown with algea if it weren't for all of the grazing fish and inverts that keep it clean. So, a good algea cleaning crew is also a nessecity in any SW reef system....especially one using natural sunlight. Sunlight will cause more algfea than normal to grow if the nutrients are there to feed them due to the higher intensity and "yellower" spectrum that natural sunlight produces. Captive reef systems have shifted to "bluer" lighting to mimic the look of the reef at depth...the "bluer" lights are less useable by nuisance algeas, and more useable by the symbiotic zooxanthalee in the coral's tissue.

Again, grazers are a KEY part of any reef setup, and you'll see that redox has no shortage of them in his system.

Upgrade on skimmer

Upgrade on skimmer

Thanks wetone My corals are in vats so I dont get dirrect light on the sides like you get with a glass tank . And like JC said....He is right on . I decided to try a needle wheel pump on one of my skimmers. I know that I need to put the venturi in front of the pump to get the full efect. Right now it is set up with the venturi after the pump.

Was doing maintenance and took some pics of whats going on out there these days;) Nothing is for sale just wanted to show some stuff other than what I always post. This one is a ReeferM that I got about four years ago. This is actually grown from a frag of the mother colony. It was only 1" originally

And for all wondering if a floor tile works. More of the same acro

I glued the tile to a peg

some acro frags?

some acro frags?

Most of my acros are unknowns. We can only guess. I dont throw any half dead corals away. Sometimes they come back

More pics of various sps in my gh. I still have an on going algae problem that began with my new egg-crate. The snails still have the algae on them but look at the pvc ....coraline is doing well. The bottom needs vacuming but its getting harder to get to. I will add a tunze wavebox and extension or two;)

These acros are on the bottom of the vat. Two of them have grow from a fallen frag

I can finally say the montiporas are living. I had problems for a while .I think it was due to parasites mainly . I have dipped corals in all kinds of stuff. In most cases it worked and worked well. I never give up on a dieing coral because sometimes theres a quarter inch piece still living. The green digi got glued in upside down

It grows like crazy in all the vats except for the sps vat. There is none. I guess the calcium demand in that vat is so high it wont let it grow.Calcium is presently 440

Redox, a buddy here in Virginia Beach and I were talking about greenhouse setups the other day and were wondering if you let people come and check out your setup in person..?!?! I dont know if you ever make it up to Virginia Beach or not, but he owns an Aquarium Acrylic business up here and he's thinking of setting up a greenhouse in the future...

Hey Doug

did the Galaxia make it I hav been working too much or I would have been down to see ya

I bought some new snails myself and they have wiped out my red slime (thank god) :) What they didnt get the turkey baster did .... Now I guess I have to feed em :)

Jester sent you a pm.Yes Paul that galaxia is recovering;) Here are some pics I just took with a new acrylic box I made. This is an lps that came in on live rock I guess

Wow everything is looking great I have dirty windows .... I need to clean it up a little but its been work sleep wake up feed fish work ...repete lately

what no photo of the camra box ?

Well Ive decides to take the gh one step further. I got my tax return and Im spending some of it on two tunze waveboxes with exstentions . I already have four streams in the sps vat so adding these might rock the water right out. Im gonna find out;) I also just got a big bag of NIGARI which I am gonna try for mag sup. The stuff looks ral good. Imixed up a batch and in a clear cup you cant tell it apart from the Kent marine additive. I got a 50lb sack for just over 50 bucks:D The needle wheel pump is really kickin out some sludge

Well I guess no one has a comment or question so I will post more pics  . At the threshold of three years at the green house thing. I have grown colonies from frags. What I dont kill grows like hell. I cant say enough how much better my flow is without the egg-crate.

I have no one local that is worthy of acro frags so they have accumulated and will continue to do so

Redox,

I've been lurking around these forums for quite awhile and I partially blame you for what I've gotten myself into. You have inspired my wife I and to undertake a propagation system.

We are starting small with some setups in our garage. Hopefully in a couple of years, we can expand into a greenhouse. We'll post some pictures later this year after everything has settled out.

Thanks for your inspiration.
Jack

are you still running the venturi on the pump output, or have you switched over to the input so that the pump is chopping the air? If you aren't running it on the input you are missing out on the best part of a nw/meshwheel pump.....shaving cream thick foam in the skimmer body :)
