Now normally this would really worry me. Not anymore!

Just wanted to give an update on the Anemone guards. Although they are working very well, I wanted to improve them to the highest possible protection I could. I'm currently working on the new design, which is very similar and uses the same acrylic cylinders. I've made a few changes and I'm very confident that even over years of continued use and Nems getting close or actually crawling on top or on the front of them- they will be 100% safe and anemone proof!

New thread coming soon: (In the next week)

"DIY Anemone Guards"
Keep an eye out for it.

Pump is indeed on and in fact, it's running on the highest voltage. You can see the debris on the screen blowing LT.

Wow that's cutting it close. I found my mag stuck to my mp10 the other day. Good thing I had it covered with the foam gaurd so it only lost a few tentacle tips.

I have the new and improved version of my original design coming out in the coming week.

I'll post full details. If you want your nem 100% safe. You will want these without a doubt.

Ha ha... He's non a suicide mission. That's a lovely mag, do you have a full tank shot you can share with us?

That's a nice clean setup you have there. Looks spotless ! Why did it move to the power head? Did it need more flow ?

Not sure...no they get blasted with flow if I want too. I keep the flow like medium high. They love flow.

They just move around a lot. Some stay put though. Just depends on the NEM.

Looking forward to your thoughts on improvements. I need something like this for my nem tank.

No offense, but those look hideous. You've done a nice job with what you have to work with as the tank is already set up, but.........

If I'm going to commit a tank to Mags my design would be a false black wall or walls for those pumps for a clean look. The wall would provide 100% protection.

Another option would be to do closed loops similar to your cylinders but smaller black boxes that would look clean like a nice overflow.

I disagree. Close loop are terrible. The water output is just an outlet. Propeller type pumps are much better for water flow. Intake of the close loop is much worst for chewing up anemone unless you can defuse them, similar to the box around the propeller pumps. So a box to defuse the intake then a huge device to defuse the output. You end up with a bunch of plumping and two boxes instead of one.
False wall are good for nothing other than take up space unless you can hide everything behind it. That is why we have sumps. You cannot put PH behind the one false wall only. Just does not work well having all your PH on one wall for an anemone tank.

I don't think the profile is that big of an eye sore. Obviously none of us want equipment in our tanks. We would surely like unguarded PH's or no PH's at all. However, most Nems enjoy or need strong flow and so do a lot of our corals. Yes, I can go smaller and leave a 1/4" between the pump and the cylinder, but you will end up with a chopped up Nem. If you did go that close, the holes would need to be extremely small. You will then starve your pump. If you drilled 1/8" holes and the pump is that close to the cylinder, the suction will be a lot stronger. Unfortunately, these issues prevented me from going smaller. My main focus is protecting my mags. This is the best way for me personally. Trust me, the PM's are already coming in. Some of my local board members have already asked to buy the old ones. You can go about many different ways of doing it and use a lot of different materials, but Acrylic is just clean. The only ones I've seen with a great design were Tektite's that she made for her MP40's. She and I just happen to live in the same city (Houston) and we're on the same local forum. We have discussed the positives and negatives of her design and after running them for over a year, her feedback was much appreciated. I have spoke with a lot of Nem keepers right here on this forum via PM and Text, and have received a lot of great feedback from them as well. This is what I personally like and what made the most sense for me from all the feedback I've received. These were only a quick fix and test for the current guards I'm making now. To my surprise, they've been extremely effective. They've already prevented 2 mags from being killed or chopped up. That is the reason why I'm sticking to the same design, but just tweaking things I've learned so far. Chopped up mag will wipe out your entire tank- both coral and fish. I believe the new ones will be almost 100% anemone proof and prevent that. If you think you can make something better and more attractive, please post your pictures. I'm sure everybody would like to see them. Remember they have to be safe. They can look good all day, but if it doesn't keep the animals safe or perform well, it's a waste of time and money. Good luck to you!

Jared,

You've been around a lot longer than I have and I'm assuming you have read the Beananimal thread since I can see it on the back of your tank. I just wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of something Herbie said in that thread as it came to mind when reading this thread:

As for Beans addaption of a now very popular overflow method.............I say GREAT. It what makes this hobby even better for all of us. I think Beans method leaves a little more margine for error.........which is good.
This hobby is constantly changing for the better do to members whom are not afraid to post up there ideas...........good or bad.
Let me tell you this though................you have better have thought your idea out VERY thoroughly BEFORE you choose to post it!!!! The naysayers will come out of every nook and cranny to find every flaw they can think of. Badger and personally attack you they will.

Your design is solid. I'm willing to bet something almost exactly the same will be available commercially in the next two years or so, if not sooner. If we had it our way, we would all have rimless tanks with no equipment inside them at all. Unfortunately we don't have that option and our livestock determines what we need to keep the conditions inside our tank safe and comfortable for them.

This design looks to me alike another advancement in the hobby and many many others seem to agree. Keep up the good work and keep us updated.
