o2manyfish - Need Some Strong Folks for just a few mins - Will Pay with Frags

Hey Guys,

I have a couple of big upgrade projects for my reef system. For those of you who have been to visit you know that my back yard filtration system is greatly showing it's age.

We are slowly starting a full revamp of the our entire reef system. The final touch is an all new display tank (bigger of course).

But one of the first steps is I need to prepare a new sump to be installed. I acquired a used (but never had water in it) 300g glass sump. The sump has 4 sets of glass baffles that are siliconed in and were built with ridiculously tight tolerances.

I can not get a blade between the baffles and the tank panes to cut them out. I bought a commercial product that dissolves silicone glue.

I need to rotate the tank onto it's front pane. Pour on the silicone killer, then let it sit overnight to dissolve the adhesive. Then cut the silicone. Then flip the tank onto the back pane. Let sit overnight. And then hope with the sides released I don't have to dissolve the silicone on the bottom.

The tank is a 360gallon (96x36x24) glass tank - So the weight is close to 1000lbs. I have (3) glass suction handles. I can get another one.

The tank is sitting on my side yard, and it's sitting on 2x4s so we can get straps under it to help.

I only need a total of a couple of minutes of help. So hoping to find maybe 4 people with good strong backs that are close by who can help to quickly flip.

And then come back a few days later and do it again.

Hopefully with the holiday week, there are some people who have time off that are willing to help out.

I'm not on any kind of strict schedule to get this done.

Let me know if anyone is willing to help, and what your availability is.

Thanks

Dave B

Hello Dave,

I'm out of town at the moment but should be back by Wednesday night. I'm not exactly the strongest guy around but will do what I can to help. Just let me know when and I'll head over if I'm available. I'm less than 10 mins away from you so short notice is fine if I'm home.

I can help. I am free most this weekend and all weekends. During the week I am out at 5pm.

It takes me about 10mins to drop off my daughter at her school in Encino so I'm nearby.

Also depending on when you do it I can bring another guy. Either my brother or sister's boyfriend. No need for frags, just want to help.

When are you planning this? If it fits my scedule I’d be down to make the drive and lend a hand. Frags would be appreciated but not nessasary. I’s like to see your genorator and ATS as well.

Just some thoughts about these baffles:

1) Have you removed ALL the other silicon that makes the seam? (I realize you cannot get what's actually directly between the baffle and tank glass.)

If the fit is that tight, there probably isn't that much silicone between and it would be the silicone outside, forming the edge/seam, that is only holding it.

2) Using the silicone killer is very risky for the integrity of the original tank, if it gets to the main seals. Also, is there a risk of the chemicals from it affecting future livestock after use?

3) If removing a panel seems like a likely scenario, maybe it's best to just do that and re-silicone the whole tank from the get-go?

4) Are the baffles that important? Maybe just break them?

I'm with you on all points.

If the tank is in the neighborhood of 10 years, it may be time to consider stripping it down and resealling it. The glass has a very long service life but silicone degrades over time.

Not as strong as I used to be, but I can come to help. Just need a date/time....and no frags needed...the first ones you gave me where enough

Hi Dave
I would most likely be available to help too.
(I’m local and I am off work until 1/2-18).
Let me know if you still wanna go that route, and when.
I’ll keep checking this thread

Have you ever considered using fishing line to separate the silicone from the baffles? Once you get into it, you can just slide the fishing line down to cut between the silicone and baffle.

Or picture frame hanging wire. That's what Aaron and I used to cut out the silicone when he replaced my back panel. Let me know when you decide to move this and I'll see if I can skip away from my family for a bit.

+1 on the fishing line/wire. Can't hurt to give it a try.
