Octo Extreme Skimmer KO Club

has anybody done a wattage report and air flow reading. i have read a lot of post but cant remember reading those numbers.

How many watts does it pull and what kind of air flow does it pull

I just got an Octo Extreme 160 and know nothing about how it works. Mine sits in my sump in 9 inches of water, but now I'm reading in this thread that it works best in 6 to 6.5 inches of water from the base of the skimmer, the amount of water from the base of my skimmer is only 4.5 inches.

6 to 6.5 inches of water from the very bottom of the skimmer.

So its from the bottom of the whole unit even though the pump sits under it? Sorry to sound so dumb but it doesn't come with instructions. Also, the pump is really loud, I was reading back through this thread, do I need to adjust it or does it take a while to break in?

What instructions, they make a great product but really do lack in the instruction manual/sheet dept. Run it wide open for a day or so then gradually start closing it a little at a time. It does take a while to break in.

Not all systems are the same causing the skimmer to react differently to each system. I couldn't adjust mine correctly (Too touchy) in 8 inches and found 6.5 to be the sweet spot. It's a matter of trial and error for each setup.

yeah the flow is working better. I also realized that i had put that split piece back in there wrong; which is why my bubble flow was so erratic. I was trying to do it with it in the sump and my arm all contorted. But to properly measure and make the stand I had to take the skimmer out; and that's when I fixed it. Thanks and good luck to all!

Oh and just like before, my skimmer works best in appx 6.5-8" of water!

ok, it is time for me to purchase the new skimmer. Looking at a Super Reef Octopus 5000 int for a 180 gallon with a 60 gallon sump and a 10 gallon fuge.

Do you think this is too big for this setup?

I was cleaning my Octo extreme 200 today and when I took out the PPW the little plastic key inside the pin wheel was broken off. I had to switch back to the original pin wheel. I have been running the PPW for about a year so I guess that good. Any one know if there are any new pin wheels out that are better or should I just order another PPW.

Hi all I want to setup a SPS dominant tank with the Berlin method. I want to put in either a Bubble blaster HY5000 or an OTX250. the tank will be 130G. I want a big fish load as well with lotsa chromis and anthias. I will also feed often. will this skimmer be ok or will i be overskimming?

Same thing happened to a lot of people. If I still had my sicce, I would do a couple things:

1) I would run the MSX/SWC pw with their new reducer
2)Run the WM reducer and Red Demon
3) Run MW

I have not tried the Red Demon combo, nor have I tried the MSX reducer, but the MSX pw was my fav pw. Mesh rocks if you are a hands on person.

My PPW broke within a few weeks and I got a free replacement from ATB. I noticed that the replacement pinwheel was MUCH more rugid than the one I purchased. I assume that means it will just take time for the cheaper PPW to flush out of the market.

I emailed ATB and looks like they may send me a replacement pin wheel.
I have read a little bit on the red demon, so far all good. I would like to check out the WM reducer, anyone have a link to where to get some information on them. Thanks for the feed back.

I had to switch out the stock pin wheel for the mesh wheel today. what a difference a good pin wheel/ mesh wheel does compared to the stock wheel.

My Octo 300 is starting to break in,

I need to get an ATO because it HATES variable water level, when I top off my 6 gallons a day it freaks out... but an excuse to get an ATO isn't a bad thing...
