October meeting, please read and RSVP

Howdy everybody.

Our October meeting is a week from today at 1pm at Steve's house in Guerneville. If you've never been there, it is SO worth the drive. Aside from being a beautiful part of the north bay, he has lots of tanks brimming with beautiful corals.

Plus, we have a special guest speaker. Tom Ghiglieri from Lumenarc has agreed to come talk to us about lighting!!

We'll also be doing a bbq :beer:, raffle and frag swap!

You will want to use these directions to Steve, as they contain more necessary detail than you'll get from MapQuest or similar sites.

Please RSVP on this thread so I can get an idea of how much food we'll need. The bbq will be the usual $10 each, $5 for kids.

This should be a terrific meeting. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there! :dance:

I am going for sure, as for the GF she is a maybe at this point. Her store opens at a new location that day. Jake have you checked the tides that day? We could go for an abb dive in the morning before if you are down for some abbs?

TOm you got PM...you know you can get a reef abalone for your tank right? Mine just died =(...i found out they need cooler water more like a seahorse tank.

10th Sat low is at 10:20 it is +3.4. is that to high for you.....if you wanna try diving i have an extra of everything? you just gotta hold your breath! =) we won't know if it's rough till it get closer...i have a buddy that lives near Fort Bragg i just give him a call and he looks out his window. Let me know. It ends next month.

Or you can try spearfishing! that is a blast if you have never done it...how ironic would that be going to a reef meeting with a big ling for the BBQ.

Steve's grill is not large but I'm bringing my Weber gas grill as reinforcements, so I bet we could get that puppy (ok, guppy?) on there!

i'd love to try diving but beein a smoker i dont know if i could hang....and definately dont wanna be a statistic. lol. how deep do you dive?

Diving will give you an incentive to stop smoking or at least slow down. I dive about 15-25 feet about 1 min breath holds, but i know a few spot where you only need to dive 10-17 feet (deep swimming pool)....the key is to just stay relaxed. If you panic you become a statistic. you do have a weight belt right? I have everything else extra. What is your foot size? I have an extra set of large fins 10-12. We could go Sat morning for the 10:00 tide and then back to Gurnville by 1. We can check Saltpointcondiditons.com for wave height and wind. If it looks good we should do it. You can bring some other ppl if you want, but of course we are going to the meeting after. I could pick you up at 7:30-8am to head up. I know a good spot past 20 min past Fort Ross. I'm not sure how it relates to Gunrville....I'll need to look. The good thing is some days when you can’t rock pick cause it is rough you can dive cause you are out past the break…..

Dive conditions are near perfect this morning. We are expexting winds to increase a bit this afternoon but for now the ocean is flat and water visibility is good. The weekends forecast calls for more of the same with the possibility of large surf later next week.
The kelp is becoming very thick in a lot of dive locations, it is wise to streamline your dive gear down to avoid any entanglements.

REMEMBER! Drop your weightbelt at the FIRST sign of any trouble in the water. Not dropping the weightbelt in time is the # 1 factor in abalone diver drownings.
