Official Borbonius Anthias Thread

Any word on if these are in season? Looking to buy one but LFS cant get them in my area.

Any tip on online retailers in stock would be appreciated.

Maybe next year

Maybe next year

I have not seen any available since the quake in Japan. i believe these come from Japan so they are probably not importing them at this time and since they are seasonal anyway...we probably will not see them again until next year.

It may be a bit late for this species...IIRC, we picked our trio up from the wholesaler in January a couple of years ago. They're indeed super fish.

Ahhh shucks!

If you all don't mind disclosing: Is $250 still the going rate for these fish (retail)?

I have heard stories about them being available for $100 during season but I haven't ever seen any of the online retailers offering them.

Was that at a LFS? If so, can you PM me the store?

Just called Ocean Gallery II in New Jersey asking about some and they have one in stock: $250.

I inquired about getting a a few of them and they seemed optimistic about me being able to order in a few.

I'm not ready for them yet I just wanted to know what they charged.

They ship as well and I've heard great things about them. Must be an awesome shop!

To be honest, we go to so many LFS, I can't remember where we saw the fish. You might check OC Aquatics tho...they seem to have them every so often.

I believe that's where we saw it.

Just picked him up over the weekend from a friend of mine. Seems like that is the only way to get one of these beauties these days. My buddy had 2 in a sump for over a year! Other one jumped out and dried up. that was sad to see. I was really looking for a pair.

Any issue keeping a pair in a 75 with a pair of Centropyge multicolor and a Serranocirrhitus latus (fathead sunburst anthias)?

Unless you have a brave sunburst, it may get pretty intimidated. Our trio lives in a dwarf lion/waspfish/scorp tank, and those fish have learned to feed from the stick (besides their normal feedings), and they hit it HARD...feels like a game fish when they take the line. Renee actually smacks them away with the stick, and I usually shoo them with my hand from outside the tank.

Great news, Tomorrow morning around 11am when Fed Ex comes, I will be joining your club! I have been waiting patiently for my borbonius and the day has finally come.

Question, I have a couple of tricolor anthias, both are pretty small (3 inches max) do you think I will need to remove them? They dont really chase anything now, and I have a sunburst that they completely ignore as well, but I want to play it safe. I have always told myself I would gut my tank if that is what I had to do to keep a borbonius. I think they are the coolest fish ever.

Pics to come tomorrow, and thank you for any advice in regards to my new venture/ family member :)

TaNuki, I would get rid the Tricolors if you can. I regret having mine because it is very aggressive and get pretty large. Mine harassed the bornonius where it lost weight and its tail. I still have both but I have to spot feed the borbonius.

yeah I saw in the past week or so that 2 popped up on live aquaria. I guess it's getting to be that season where their collection is back. Good luck with it and I hope it acclimates well!

Yeah liveaquaria had a few but they sold out yesterday I think. Nyaquatics might have a few left but where theirs are under $200 they may be gone soon too.

I picked up a trio from NY Aquatics today, when I talked to Michael this afternoon he had 4 or 5 left but I'm sure they will go quickly.
