OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

Jonathan, today one of our LFS had a grand opening. They installed a 1000g reeftank which they built themselves. Seeing it helped me understand just how large your tank is. It's truly awesome to see something like 13 tangs school together to eat, which happened three times while I was there for 5 hours today. To avoid derailing your thread, I'll just post the URLs to the pictures instead of displaying them.

The RTN event in your tank could be totally unrelated to what you've done recently.

Not to derail the thread further, but that is just about exactly what I've been drafting on the sketchup for when we move or add onto the house! That it gorgeous!

So far the frags appear to be OK. They are in the QT with my new Golden Rhomboid wrasse ( Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis) pair...

Thought of something you might use: I placed a piece of 2' x 12" x 1/2" acrylic loose in my tank and within 2 days both nerites and ceriths had laid egg masses on it. I think that would be a great way to extract eggs and rear them in a 10g tank with no skimmer. As soon as I get done with guests, NY trip, fuge lighting upgrade, DC8 mod, and skimmer mod I think I will set up a snail rearing tank and try that out. What do you think of that?

Jonathan,

That would be a great experiment! Ceriths and nerites are both excellent snails that would benefit from no skimming and also adding some kind of phyto as a food source. Keep me informed, and I'll have the forums up for the project before too long so you could post the experiment there as well.

Nice pics Marc. That doesn't look very deep So I am guessing it is a square tank? Not a bad Grand Opening for sure!

Hop, be careful what you wish for! I just spotted a large Aiptasia previously unkown, and it is in 35" of water...now how am I going to get that sucker? I used a long feeder filled with vinegar for my first attack!

And you seriously need space to store stuff like salt. With a tank that size, you have to buy in volume to save cash so right now I have 10 200g buckets on hand. Under normal operating circumstances, I only use about a bucket per month, but so far I have had any normal months. :D

Brian, I am actually stoked about that...do you think an HOB Bio-Wheel type filter would be a good call? Maybe with carbon but without floss?

Golden Rhomboids:

Weaker one in QT:

Stronger one released into display:

Jonathan, how long are you QTing your new arrivals?

Doesn't seem like very long especially with a recent outbreak of ick.

Jonathan,

I don't think a HOB bio-wheel would be a good call. Anything that can physically trap the larvae would not be a good thing IMO. Carbon would certainly qualify for trapping of larvae.

I think the best bet would be simply a small powerhead and frequent feeding of phyto and water changes. Although I'm not sure how you would avoid throwing the baby out with the bath water so to speak. If you want to try this, I would suggest posting a reply in this thread with what you plan to do and ask for Dr Shimek's opinion:

mrcrab: You are correct...and in fact it was not a terribly bright idea to get new fish in the first place. These were on my "Wish List" and are very rare. My LFS contacted me when he saw them on a supplier list and offered me the pair at less than the usual cost for one male. I will keep the weak one in the QT for at least a month, but unfortunately I had to put the stronger one into the display so he wouldn't kill the weaker one.

I was trying to think of a way to partition the QT, but with the surviving coral frags in there on egg crate, I couldn't come up with a solution that I thought would be quick and adequate. Now I will make a partition for any such future events.

The thing about these wrasses is that when they sleep, they wrap themselves in a mucus cocoon so they are unlikely to fall victim to ICH based on my research of the life cycle of ICH. I could be wrong but I hope I am not! :) I still have not been able to catch the PBT to put him in a hospital tank, but he is actually getting better slowly. So the outbreak is being managed by cleaner shrimp and heavy feeding AFAIKT.

So, I don't always make the best decisions but that's the way it goes...

Brian: I kind of figured that would be your answer, but then when I thought about the water changes that also posed a potential problem. I guess with just snail larvae, maybe water changes wouldn't be very often?

I'll check into that forum and thanks for your response!

Good point. According to Dr. Ron this is acceptable although not very ideal in the transfer of algae, but he states that it damages many cells in the process. Also, I think that much of what I would be trying to get out of the water column would go back in having been also collected in the filter. It's hard to say without direct experimentation, but that is something I will definitely keep in mind.

Jonathan,

I read Dr Shimek's response and it is about what I thought would be needed. It seems doable, but just time intensive. I hope to have the forums up by August/Sept and you could start your attempts then and hopefully we'll attract like minded people that can help you out! Of course mrcrab is pretty much on the right course with the micron bag idea :)

That is interesting. More volume than I use but sure is a good price. I wonder why they won't ship? I ship 60lb items with no problem.

No time today. I am heading out to NY for a week and I have to get my act in gear. So much to do...I'll take some pics when I get back!

Need Cash, Found a nice 250 Gallon will sell my self for 2, 000 any takers? haaahaa well okay kind of joking.................

Thanks HOP. Things went a bit crazy right before I left so my caretaker has his hands full. Deep Breaths....Deep Breaths...

Enderrea: SO where is this 250g? I need a larger sump!

:blown: aren't you just so sweet :P
some time when i have time at home to figure out how to post pic's of my tank, I'll get that to you.
