Evan has been showing me some threads here on RC where they ordered a plastic wheel that is made for a rotating scrubbing brush that has a bunch of pins sticking off one end. Another image I saw looked like a small scrubbing pad like I'd use under a buffer (in larger diameter of course) that might work. Finally, in Scott's thread they made a wheel using the leader material of a weed eater. Any of those might help in your quest to perfect your skimmer.

You really need some type of nifty brush system that will let you clean the neck of your skimmer each day or every other day. It would make such a difference without having to overcome some scum for several days.

Thanks for the new pictures. It's nice to see the tank a little more often.

Are you writing about how get finer bubbles or just about cleaning the skimmer neck? I don't quite follow your first paragraph.

I have thought about a sprayer system for the neck but haven't gotten around to researching it yet.

Any thoughts on a better way to scrape the tank?

Tanks with taller rockwork seem to look bigger. My rockwork isn't that high but I think my next tank will be 36" high with rock pillars all the way to the top. I'm so blown away with Ralph's tank that is going to be TOTM in September. I think it's my new favourite tank - surpassing even oregonreef.

I built one of those but have a credit card fastened to it. Do you think their scraper is better than a credit card? Maybe I should attach a Kent scraper blade to it? That may be a good idea.

Marc, what about this?

What are you referring to?

Well if you talk to Weast, he'll tell you that he will, if he hasn't already, remove a bunch of rock from his system. The issue is that if you fill your tank with rock, there's no place for corals, and BTW, pillars typically appear in deeper water as a mechanism for the corals to get more light. I talked to him a bit about it before I auqascaped my tank. I have a wall on the left side that is about 22." tall so I can put very high light loving corals on it, but they won't be able to grow very tall

And 36" deep tank will be tough to manage. Mine is 35" and the depth does make it more difficult to maintain.

Their scraper is a thick plastic that looks identical to a double-ended razor blade, but thicker. I bet it would work great.

I'll ask Evan to dig up those links, because I don't know what he searched for. Maybe he typed DIY Needle Wheel.

marc you thinking about this?

I have messed around trying to turn my DIY skimmer into a needle wheel. It is square :) but quite a bit smaller than Jon's. I think his collection cup is the same volume as my entire tank. If those are the discs you are thinking of I have heard they are really abrassive.

Yes, those are one type. Another looks like a thick scrubby pad that is a bunch of woven fibers.

I think those plastic ones you posted would work if you cut out every other pin.

Obviously it would be too small for this application but I tried using a bioball. My problem was getting it ballanced. These make work well but make sure to balance them out otherwise it is unholy loud. I think the poster that showed these says they were from 3M.

Got a name or source? I buy a lot of 3M products for my marine customers so i'll check on those suppliers. What's the intended purpose of those wheels?

No it was mentioned in the bioball needle wheel DIY thread. Guy did mention they were made by 3m. Let me do some digging and I will let you know. My Stepmom's brother in law is like a VP for 3m. Maybe I can get a discount lol.

Found them from one of my main Marine suppliers:

3Mâ"žÂ¢ Rolocâ"žÂ¢ Bristle Discs

73689 MMM#18710 White 20 120 1" 45101 $2.91
67683 MMM#18730 Green 10 50 2" 5539 $4.60
67684 MMM#18732 Yellow 10 80 2" 5539 $4.60
67685 MMM#18733 White 10 120 2" 5539 $4.60
67686 MMM#18734 Green 10 50 3" 5540 $7.10
67625 MMM#18736 Yellow 10 80 3" 5540 $7.10
67687 MMM#18737 White 10 120 3" 5540 $7.10

I am going to order one and see how it can work...

make sure to take some pics on how you do it. I was thinking the smaller Scotch-Briteâ"žÂ¢ Radial Bristle Disc Thin Bristle, 1 in x 1/8 may work on my MJ400. I will ahve to find some place local that carries them. I think it will improve my littel DIY skimmer's performance.

yeah I haven't figure out how to attach them. The Roloc ones require a special attachment that is 5/8 x 11 thread I believe. I can't remember what the threads are on my Sequence but I do remember that it was a strange thread also. They may match. If you can't find them let me know and I'll send you one.
