OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

The reef is looking better today. Strange thing is that while a few acropora are suffering, other corals seem to be thriving. My birdsnest that was a little dull and thick has just devolped points and is a brighter pink color.

I have new water ready for a water change tomorrow with zero nitrate and phosphate, and 425 ppm Ca with 8.3 dKh...nothing added. :)

I moved one Vortech lower today...the LPS are not happy about it and I may have to re-position the ones that are not firmly attached.

You remember giving me a hard time for always keeping my sump clean:lol:

That is all I did. I would shut off the pump to the display, scrape and wipedown the sump with the skimmer set to stun and leave it for a while. Then I would come back, drain the sump and wipe it out, then replace with fresh SW. Most of the crud got taken away in the skimmer and what was left when the sump when empty was easy to wipe out.

me, give you a hard time? naw... My skimmer doesn't pull from the sump though. It pulls from the overflow so I can't use it to clean the sump water. My evil plan has backfired! :(

alk up over 11.0 today. SPARKSS had an interesting suggestion that I remove some media. I am not sure why I never thought of that.

Sherman has been making me jealous buying fish all the time so I finally broke down and picked up a blonde naso from the LFS. It is really sweet looking, had been in-house for a few weeks, and is eating well. It acclimated nicely and ate while in the bucket. Unfortunately I had to get back to the store so I introduced him to the tank during daylight hours. He seems to have done fine though and after an initial shy period, began to eat when I fed the tank. What an unbelievable looking fish!

I also picked up a ricordia rock. Want to try my hand at them again.

Don't ask for pics...the glass is totally dirty...

 fine no pics! At least you finally got a naso of your own and I don't have to worry about mine being fishnapped anymore:D

Quick update; The PLTA appears to be fully recovered with good size and nice healthy cloring. I am very happy about that and thanks for all the input given. Apparently it only eats shrimp!

On another note, the Jade Torch lost its last polyp. Seems to be the way it is for me and LPS and I think I will just not be able to keep them in this system, at least not until I develop better husbandry skills. Total bummer because that Torch was magnificent.

Corals are looking much better and the STN that was going on seems to have subsided. I am doing water changes every 2 - 3 days and working on my detritus issue. I still need to refine my method to keep from clouding the tank, but each time it happens I don't see any lingering affects.

Trying to vacuum the display is also a major issue and I may need to change the aqua-scaping to help facilitate better detritus removal. It does seem to me that the corals are letting me know when there is a problem and I am happy for that. A tank crash would seriously bum me out!

Sorry to bother but after reading this entire thread and adding it to my favorites. my suggestion would be less water changes, so beneficial bacteria can stay developed It is just a thought. With a tank that size I'm not sure anyone nows the perfect husbanry skills

MrSaltLife:

[welcome]

Wel, there are nuances to each system for sure, but I have a lot more to learn. Like last night I missed the tank feeding, which happens maybe once every two months, and really shouldn't impact the tank. Yet tonight I got home to feed and something had eaten an entire colony of polyps. (never happened before)

I also noted that the new naso has turned nearly black, and would not eat. It is acting much like the last one I had in that it is ignoring the flurries of food all around it while the other fish are in a crazed eat-a-thon. Very strange. I am concerned enough that I may pull it out of the tank and QT it to get it to eat. Seems strange that it ate in the acclimation bucket but won't eat in the tank. I may try to feed mysid tomorrow to see if that helps.

And BTW, a water change for me is about 80g or somewhere around 7%. I don't think there is any lack of bacteria in the system.

Before you move him, try a nori sheet soaked in water with some garlic of some type (I just used 100% pure garlic paste from the fridge, but I'm sure other garlic intended for aquarium would be better). Mine went from hiding to eating like a madman once I intorduced the nori-a-la-garlic.

I thought about that, but haven't tried it mostly because when I do feed nori like that, the entire tank of fish swarms the nori and it becomes quite a battle. I don't think the naso will get any of it to be honest. I will give that a try though since it is much easier than trying to net him. :)

Try soaking it for awhile and then tearing it into lots of little pieces so the feeding isn't concentrated in one spot.

Gabriel: I already feed the tank with nori strips and the naso isn't going after them. The rock idea is good in that I know that can get a tang crazy.

Sherman: You know full well that garlic is the best medicine. Just let go of your prejudice and give your fish a treat! I just read on another thread about a reefer feeding his fish bananas.

That was me! :D

Zuccini works too, my fish love it i've had them bite me when trying to put it in the tank... thank god they don't have big teeth.

well, the naso died today. It looked totally healthy, no wounds, and I doubt it was long enough to starve. Unfortunately this is my second naso to perish rather quickly. :(
