You only sleep for 3 hours or did you just take out the IV drip for that long? :D

Maybe the doser was busy dosing his tank for 3 hours?

Actually, there's no way to stagger them as there just isn't enough room inside the skimmer. I was originally going to do that, or actually only have one level, but these stones are gigantic! Take a look at the pics again and you'll see what I mean...

Next project is to seriously upgrade my mechanical filtration.

looking good Jonathan. So how much did your ORP improve with just the new stones ? Also, did you check to see if your power consumption went up or down with the new setup ?

Sleep? What is that?

Hey Tom, ORP is up an average of about 25 points right now, but we'll see what it does long term. I didn't think about the power issue. It was using 120W prior (which is what the pump is rated at), and now it is using 105.5W...Seems strange to me.

OK...so I'll try to post again, but I am not promising it will be as witty as the first time, which went "poof".

Couple things to note is that I have been asked by a few reefers how the skimmer upgrade is helping out. It's tough to quantify on this size skimmer since I was always pulling out a lot of nog. You can't really judge it by NOG GPD since t's the quality of it that matters most IMO.

Anyway, today, all throughout the light cycle, the tank has been absolutely crystal clear. That is a nice visual confirmation that the skimmer upgrade is helping out. :) The water is the clearest I have seen it in months, and that's saying a lot since I typically view it through the side panel and therefore am looking through 8' of water.

I also found another large deposit of detritus in a non viewable area behind the rocks and toward the front. I will target that area for my next vacuuming expedition!

What it all seems to come down to, regardless of the various factors that led to this recent melt down, the bottom line is that I am not getting enough flow around and under my rocks. (not nads)...

Unfortunately, with the Vortech temp. issue, I am unable to run them full blast and my reef has suffered over time. Currently Eco-Tech is working to solve the problem, but so far this amounts to running the pumps in pulse mode, which does in fact lower overall temp., but also does not provide the maximum flow. So now I have to decide how t move forward. One way would be to buy a few more Vortechs...I had planned to buy 2 or 3 more anyway, but with the reduced flow, it looks like I would need 6 to 8 more, and that is a serious chunk of change.

The good news is that the corals I fragged into the QT are all well and recovering nicely. I built a rack for in the display tonght and moved one frag over to test it out. Once I have it positioned properly, I will move the rest and start re-doing my QT area by installing a 90+g main tank and using the current one as the sump. That should give me plenty of room for my snail project as well as dealing with corals.

I also am on the cusp of upgrading my mechanical filtration and possibly cleaning the viewing pane of the display!! Yes, I wrote that out loud!

We'll see as I am still struggling with my store computer system and have to take about 15,000 photos for our web cart. Man that's going to suck. At least I don't have dry balls.

On my display? Nope. Have two I got from Sherman in the grow-out tank though. They work great. There's a new pump coming out that may be an options too, but I can't remember what it's called. It's a double-ender...

For my situation, my solutions need to be macro though. a PH here and there is OK, for for the bulk of the flow, I need serious power. Somthing like 40,000 gph you know.

That's only because you can't see through the front viewing panel!

Glad halloween's over and the goblins have left your thread. There must have been 6 phantom posts.

How about moving a vortech low on the back panel and see if that helps with the settling detritus problem?

damn, rough crowd!

I have been getting phantom posts to virtually every thread, and mine keep disappearing...so much for paying to be on this board.

Actually Barry, that is what I am planing on doing. I am going to lower all of my Vortechs down near the bottom and run them on pulse, and re-do my returns to feed the center and upper water column.

Always a pleasure to see what your up to.

Good luck with getting rid of the detrius, the stuff you probably hate about this planet :D

cheers

Chris

you talking about the polaris? saw it at macna, looks promising. only issue would be - how do you put it in the tank so it is at least a little inconspicuous?

I am not sure if that's the name but it rings a bell. And of course, that is the issue with any type of powerhead. Visual clutter is hell, but sometimes creative solutiions can be implemented to mitigate it.

How's the school tanks Ace? Any ID on that shrimp yet? :)

yup. that's the one. It doesn't look like it will do much in my system, but i sure would like to see one running.

According to the stats, the larger one does 80,000 lph, almost 21,000 gph.
