OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

maximods might be a good idea for behind your rock. You could put those behind your rock and hopefully forget about them :)
Seems fairly cheap for 2500gph too.

too many wires Kurt. I really don't want any of that in my tank. For 20,000 gph, I would figure out a way to hide that wire, but 10 wires is just too much for me.

wow 20000gph.

4 hammer head 4x 5800gph=23200gph cost 4x339=$1356 plus plumbing
7 vortech 7x3000gph=21000gph 7x420=$2940 no plumbing no wire
4 tunze 6201 4x(1,319 to 5,283USgal./h)=21132gph 4x452=$1808 with 4 wire

the tunze is more effective cost for your 20000gph flow and you only have to worry to hide 4 wire.

Hammerhead = holes and heat in tank.

Tunze = big honking, ugly PH and heat in tank

Not to mention the type and quality of flow.

Paddle Wheel and 3 monkeys for day, evening, and graveyard shifts @ 22,000 gph x 6 bananas per day = $1,247.87 for 10 Years.

Watch out for the Tunze haters Anthony...oh wait, I resemble that!

The Hammerheads are the least expensive up front and the most reliable, but long-term they would cost more in electricity. Right now, nothing beats a Vortech for electrical efficiency, low heat, superb flow, no wires, no holes, low sound, etc. but there are some of us working on serious departures from common flow methods. Surge tanks are one great way to get excellent flow and a low electrical consumption, but there is no room for them in my man-cave.

Right now there are other devices being built that will put everything on the market out the door for large systems. But they cannot be used on small tanks like under 500g. And that's all I can say about that so don't ask!!

And BTW, 20,000 gph is only half of what I need. I need bursts up to 40,000 gph. Think I should glue my rocks together??? :eek1:

NOOOOOO! He said Tunze in Johnathan's thread!

haha what happened did his ex g/f work for tunze? Well then I guest 7 vortech will be better but it cost $1100 more....

Sorry Johnathan I didn't know you have a history with tunze...:)

I only have 2 Tunze in my tank and they do get hard to hide if your going for the clean look. I have them behind my top rocks. If I want to add flow I will get the Vortech in the future.

In my estimation I would need 18 Vortechs to get a net average flow of 40,000 gph. Right now I am planning on seven, but I can easily see it jumping to 12 just to keep the detritus in suspension.

And Marc, I can't take credit for that...stolen from an RC chick! But I do use it regularly at home now: "Honey, I am going down to the Man-Cave..." It works a bit like calling our out-building a workshop. So when I am out there, I am WORKING.

I am so stoked you guys! Looks like I will be putting the frags into the display tonight, and we have a frag swap coming up so it will be the first time I bring corals to it. :D What do you think I should charge? $25/frag?

I don't think you'll get $25 for xenia frags. :p

So 18 Vortechs= $6300. Frags at $25 a piece. Sell 252 frags and it pays for itself. You just have to rationalize these things.

Barry, people actually ask me for xenia and I just tell them no. In our county, xenia is very popular, and I think it's mostly because it grows well in funky tanks.

Actually Paul, it's more like $7,200 with the WWD right? But I am a bit worried about the maintenance on 18 Vortechs. That would mean I would have to soak one just about every two nights and swap it with the next one. Right now I own 5 and I have never had all 5 on the tank.

wow big tank do cost a lot to set up. I spend close to 8k and I haven't seen water yet. And your tank is 4 time bigger....have you ever thought about working for a lfs to get employee discount..:-)

Well I have 20+ ready to go. Seriously, my reef has been done on the cheap, and it still is far less than therapy! ;)

I lost 5 cleaner shrimp when my tank did the melt-down, and I am wondering if something in the tank ate them or if they died from the dinos/water quality issue...

I suppose the longnose hawk or one of the wrasses could be preying on them but it seems very remote to me. Anyone have thoughts on this?
