OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

It's been a little while since my last update so here are a few notes:

The reef is looking good. Corals are growing, clams seem to be getting better, and alkalinity is getting up near my target. I think the issue really stems from the change in weather and therefore lower top-off. The system was dialed in for so long that I really forgot about keeping that stuff square. I have added more turbulence to the upper water column in the hopes that it will increase the evap. rate. I have also been dosing baked baking soda whenever I go into the tank room.

Sherman and I planted a few corals but there are still about 10 on the rack that need to be added to the reef. Many of these require a swim suit and a helper. I have several nice corals cropping up "naturally" and I am really pleased about that. It seems kind of counter-productive to be doing this aqua-scaping when i know I will be replacing my tank, but I cannot leave them on the rack much longer. So my method is to attach them to smaller rocks so that when the time comes to do the swap, they will be more easily handled.

Fish are great although that orange shoulder is a poo machine. It craps all over the place and I am scared of what a mess it will make when it grows up!

My buddy Daniel sent me these pics today:

I feel really bad for him because I coached him through the setup process and he did everything by the book. He let his tank sit with no corals or fish for 4 months. He QT'd his fish for the same amount of time. He was extremely careful and what does he get? Yup, a Cirolanid Isopod!! Unfortunately, the fix generally consists of catching all the fish and breaking down the system. On e the bright side, he doesn't have a bunch of corals in there yet.

I think orange shoulders are cool fish. On my list after a big skimmer. I am already close to my limit for now. I think some pics didnt post..

no, they just posted with a giant white background. I just saved them to photobucket without editing them and was as surprised as you when I saw the post. don't really care though since the fish part is the same size.

The orange shoulder is a great fish in that it is a detrivore as well as a hard working herbavore, but what goes in, must come out eh?

Yeah..I noticed a lot of my fish are getting bigger from the last 3 months in the new display. the tangs are poopers for sure.

If and when I ever get water in my 220, the orange shoulder tang is way up on my tang list. I guess all these larger tangs are poop machines, no?

Right beside the orange shoulder is an Atlantic blue.

Anyway Jonathan your OS is sweet!

Glad to hear your enjoying some success with your reef, it's nice to enjoy it even in the midst of all the crazing turmoil.

Well, it's always nice to be able to see through the front pane too! I am going to build a top-down box this week so I can get some better pics.

Doing some aqua-scaping tonight and dropped a coral colony right into the middle of the giant GBTA. The I had to fight the clowns to get it out!

Hi Jon would you like to join my picture thread in the SPS forum...I can not believe the pictures that everyone post.

I have had the acrylic cut out for a box for months, just needed to get off my arse and get some weld on.

I finally spent $12 on a 2 1/2 gal glass tank. I realize your are a DIY aficionado, bit it works pretty well! And it was no sweat!

That's not a bad idea, but I want the black sides too. I just need to get it done but I have so much on my plate right now. I have all the materials...

And Anthony, I can't hang with that crowd, at least not yet.

haha jon I just want you to enjoy the pictures.....I have to say there is a lot of awesome pictures and good photography skill.

So I finally put together a better summary of my DIY fish food procedure. I wish I had some pictures of the dirty rinse water or the test results, but this is probably more informative anyway.

I don't have any space left on my personal web site, and RC won't allow large attachments, so this is a link to a free file storage site, and of course they have some pop-up action.

At any rate, you can download this file in the .pdf format if you want to check it out.

Hey Jonathan, that's a great handout! Thanks for sharing! How small do you chop up the seafood? What about sticking all of that stuff into a food processor?

hmmm...I should have included that in the discussion part. I will edit it. I chop it in a food processor and make it sizes my fish will eat. As your fish grow, they will shun smaller food particles, so you have to tailor the food to your fish' eating habits. Using a food processor tends to create a variety of sizes within a range, and for most tanks with a variety f fish, that is the best thing anyway.
