OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

I am still mad at the a-hole LFS owner that sold the clowns to me.

I have been stung by the Foxface and it is a lot like getting a burn. Mine was very much like the sheet pan burns I would get when I was a cook. It bubbled up on my wrist and stayed around for quite some time. Months later I can still see the mark.

I have two foxfaces, one in the reef and another in the predator tank. I've been fortunate enough to not get jabbed by one yet. I always make sure I know where they are AND I make sure they are awake before I put my hand in the tank.

I've noticed that if they are asleep and they get startled awake, they're like a rocket bouncing around in the tank, until they are fully awake.

I'm glad you're ok!

And a co-worker of mine bought maroons and I tried to tell her that they get REALLY protective of their territory and she would end up getting bit. She insisted though because they really are beautiful fish. She has a heck of a time doing maintenance inside the tank now and she comes in with marks on her hands and arms. I don't even ask....

It's a sensitive subject.

J- I now understand your dislike for some lfs..The couple by my house are ok. I drove a while last weekend to go to not so local lfs to get a 2 bulkhead he had. I get there and it is a 1 1/2 and when I told him that,,, he said no its a 2. He said they call it 2 inch because the overall size not the pipe diameter. Jagoff....Any way the wife liked a starfish there and I said ok not even thinking about it. I knew it was a little big but figured i would just feed it good. Go figure Friday I met up with some one and got a few frags. This morning woke up to some skeltons that it devoured. I was upset at my self to say the least. The lfs knew I just set up my 300 reef you would think they would mention that.

this sucks to say the least I was finally going to have some frags. The last weekend I was brave and bought a coral beauty and I see him pecking at the skeltons tonight. Strike 2 #@##@#%@$

I should have posted as soon as I got the star..I am sure some one would have said yank it out and put it in my fuge untill I get rid of it.

You know my maroon has never drawn blood. She makes a big stink though and charges at my constantly...and as far as territory goes, we are talking about at least a 3 cubic feet area. Did I mention she hates montipora??

About LFS: I know there are some really goods ones out there. But this business will tend to attract hobbyists that really know nothing about running a business. Things don't go well and then they become callous. I understand it from a business perspective and they just want you to enjoy what you buy, and get tired of explaining everything to everyone. There are so many "tourists" in fish stores, they can't afford to hire top-tier staff either.

Then they answer the phone all day to repspond to questions about product bought online. It wouold drive me crazier to say the least. I have heard the most insane things said in LFS both by staff and customers. The one I go into here is owned by a really nice guy who tends to have a high level of "acceptable loss". His prices are good for the most part, and he tries to help his clients get special items.

But he also does tank maintenance so he forgets a lot about what is going on, who he is supposed to call regarding incoming orders etc. and all-arond, the service is sub-par. Again, I have to state he is a really nice guy and a marine lover. In fact, he would much rather be diving around the world than running his store, and his underwater photography is superb.

The interesting thing is that he ad his staff are VERY careful about what they say to me and Sherman because they know we are educated about the animals we keep (or at least moreso than their average customer). So I hear them saying funny stuff to other customers but when it comes to me, I get much different reponses. Instead of calling it a "filter-feeder", they'll tel me they don't know what it eats. They are good guys so I do try to give them some business. The other LFS is just a total a-hole liar and I haven't been in his store in 18 months. I will never set foot in his store until the going-out-of-business sale. :furious:

Over near Seattle we have a decent store called Barrier Reef. It's still in a start-up phase but I trust that they will expand in the next couple of years. Prices are a little higher than over where I live, but so is the over-head. The staff is knowledgable and the tanks are very nice. Upscales in Portland is also a very nice store.

Eric, most sea stars are NOT captive reef compatible, and the ones that are require extremely stable mature reef systems to survive. Your best bet for stars is to bring in some mini-brittles. You will never see them again except in your filter socks, but they are good self-perpetuating cleanup crew. Drop in a dozen and never need to buy them again.

I never bought any mini-stars but they are all over the place in my reef. I have no idea where they came from. HH in on a coral I'm sure.

Our daughter gets all excited because she thinks we have baby starfish. She checks out the tank with a flashlight early in the morning, every morning, before heading out with my wife. :)

We are lucky enough to have a couple of awesome LFS's near by. They have very knowledgable people, for the most part, and they are willing to talk reef. Of course, it's always best to get 2nd, 3rd, and 4th opinions...

I use to have a bunch of them before the move but lost a lot of the brittles. I have had an out break of feather dusters, they don't bother me, I hope.. Now I think I am seeing aptasia. I will post some pics to see if I can get some good ideas on removing them. I thought it was a baby anemoe on a rock and now there are popping up everywhere.

I think crabs are easier to get rid of than aptaisa...all you need is some special soap for crabs...if only they had special soap for aptaisa

Seriously though, you need to tackle those ASAP...once they get a good hold in your system, they are almost ipossible to get rid of.

Well today I got an email alarm from my ACIII Pro telling me that there was a power outage. Neighbor called too to verify his power being out. I was at the store and my wife was about so I asked her to get to the house and check it out.

When she called me she said the power was back on. It had only been out for about 40 minutes, so that is really not a big deal, but I asked her to put an eyeball on the tank room and make sure everything was OK.

So she called me and said the tank was running fine, no issues. OK good! Then she called me back and said the QT outside the tank room was on fire. I asked if there was water on the floor and she said no, and in the background I could hear the smoke alarm. So I told her to get off the phone and put the fire out.

I booged on home to assess the situation and found that during the power re-start there must have been a wicked surge as my PH cord caught on fire near the power strip. So I got that all squared away and took a look in the tank room. Everything seemed normal but on a second pass I noticed a Koralia had not re-started. Got that going and checked the main.

There I discovered that two of my other powerheads were not functioning and upon further inspection I discovered that the power supplies are toast. Both of them were hooked through DC4HDs which is interesting in itself since the other equipment also on those was all fine. So, tomorrow a call for some new stuff!

Well that certainly sucks! But! It could have been much, much worse!!!

Good thing you asked the neighbor to take a look!

That blows, just think the other day how reef keeping is significantly more stressful then most hobbies I can think of. At least if your into cars or art or whatever you can set your hobby aside for a vacation or work without having to constantly worry about it. No luck with that here, especially not with a system as large and complicated as yours.

What the hell is wrong with us?

Dang Jonathan! That's down right scary! It's a good thing your wife went home to check on things. It could have burnt the house down.

I had read recently that a tank can easily go 8 days without feeding. This article recommended actually letting the tank take care of itself instead of relying on novices to take care of things. Other than having someone stop by once in a while just to make sure there aren't any floods and nothing is on fire.

I don't buy into that much though.

Wow! Glad to hear you didn't loose too much. (considering what would have happened if the fire got out of control)

Thanks guys. I didn't post to get sympathy but rather to show that the damn controller and my wife pulled together to keep my house from burning down. I would have given it about 20 minutes more till that stand caught fire and spread to the house.

maybe you should install a DIY sprinkler system in your tank room. Hell all you have to do is rig it so your skimmer blows up again if there is a fire. :D
