That's exactly why I hooked up a smoke detector, heat sensor, and a CO2 detector in my tank room to my monitored security system. Not taking any chances with a rouge fire. Also when I setup a webcam for my display I'm going to add another to the tank room so I can see what catastrophe is going down while I'm gone. As you can see I'm rather paranoid...

How many fires have you had? Do you attribute them to power surges, equipment failure, etc?

just the two. the last one was a split seam on a reactor that sprayed water all over some plugs. It was a near catastrophe because it was directly under one of my return lines. One of my ballast power cords melted down, a DC4HD completely disintegrated, the return line was scorched and covered in soot , and there was an inch+ of water on the floor.

Smoke billowing out from under the tank, and circuits tripped all around. I walked through the water and flipped the sub panel circuits back on, and they emmidiately popped back sending another cloud of smoke into the room. I came very close to a total tank drain that day.

It was sweet.

I'm amazed that 5 Vortechs and the hammerhead return pump provide enough circulation for your huge tank. Do you have the wavemaker option for the vortechs? And the battery backup?

Do you have the vortechs running full speed?

tbitter asked: Do you have the vortechs running full speed?

If your read back 1.5 years of postings you will probably see that Jonathan is not able to do this due to "product peculiarities"

Ok, thanks!

I wish there was a way to search a specific thread for a word. I couldn't find a way to do that.

did you install any arc fault circuit breakers beside GFI's?

Say what? I guess the answer is no. Everything that got fried was second tier, meaning there was some sort of safety mechanism between it and the source.

Look what I got:

Well I just about crapped myself a few minutes ago. I am getting the tank room squared away for some reef visitors tonight, and was cleaning up some spilled coral bones. Under them was what? Yes, my Blue Sided Scott's Fairy Wrasse. At least I know it was a fish stick event and not my elusive red crab!

Camera Box! So where are the pics??? :D

I knew I should not have posted that! Anyway, I need to learn how to use it first.

Good news about the lack of crabs. They are nasty buggers and hard to get rid of. :D

Those camera boxes make me nervous. I always visualize my $500 camera sitting in the bottom of the tank.

it floats. at least until it tips over. certainly much safer than holding my camera by hand over the tank.

He needs to put water wings on it! :D

then I wouldn't need the top-down box dillweed. Seriously, do you get lost on your way home from work?
