OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

This threads needs updates and pics for crying out loud! Plus I have not heard the mention of beer, water spills and dirty acrylic viewing panes in two weeks:D

Altohombre: PM sent.

Hop & michika: I am once again flat on my back with a debilitating spasm. I can barely walk. I do have the camera though and plan to take some pics today but we'll see what happens.

tbittner: nothing new on the tank design. I still haven't built my test wave box, and I want to do the plumbing part in sketchup, which will take some time.

chenzo1099: Thank you. And you now have enough posts to get an avatar! :D

Tank update:

1. I am still having trouble keeping alk at a steady level. It seems the powder I am currently using is not very "pure" and is leaving quite a residue in the reactor, as well as not doing much for the tank alk levels or pH. I just need to find the time to troubleshoot and perhaps switch to a different supplement.

2. Local electrical issues have yet again blown a powerhead power supply as well as fry a plug on a DC4HD. I have two more power supplies on order so I have a backup, and I guess I really need to look into whole-house surge suppresion.

3. I got in a live order this week which included 1 lb. of Ogo to experiment with, 1 CBB, 1 Maculiceps Tang, 40 red spot cardinalfish (7 alive), & 100 nerites (75 alive). All are in QT.

4. Because I built my skimmer body out of extruded acrylic, it now needs to be replaced. It had a major blowout a couple of weeks ago and I discovered that the fillets and joints are turning to dust. I have 1/2" cast sheet on order.

I am contemplating what if any changes I want to make to the skimmer. Sherman is pushing for a downdraft but I feel that will require too much work with quite a bit of uncertainty about its final performance based on my water flow etc.

I am seriously considering making the body and neck both a bit shorter. The shorter body would (IMO) create more water flow since it is fed by gravity. All I am considering is just in a range of 2 - 6 inch reduction in height.

Making the neck a bit shorter would also help skimming I believe because it would decrease the down-time due to feeding the tank and perhaps produce a more dense foam in the neck. I am really not sure I will make these changes, but it something I am thinking about right now.

5. I still have an unkown-to-me algal growth that I hope to get pictures of today. I have greatly reduced my water changes over the last two months as an experiment, but I don't think I am learning anything from it. Water parameters except for the alkalinity are all where they should be.

Well hang in the J!

If I can push through a few hundred issues, these few for you should be nothing;)

such a relaxing hobby eh Hop?

Yeah, last time I had the back thing, I lost control of my reef and ended up in a heap of trouble. So I am taking my son into the "man cave" now and getting him to do some of the work.

What a great bonding experience:lol:

Actually since getting things back in shape, I have so much time I'm not sure what to do with myself on my days off;)

Jeez! Only 7 of the 40 arrived alive? Where did you order them from?

For the electric, I usually run the power through a computer UPS. It doesn't have anywhere near the power required to keep things up and running but they do a great job filtering the line.

Yeah, are they sending you more?

And as for the electrical, I have three Tunze PHs that, I think, may be fried because of power surges, they are the only component on "normal" non-tank-dedicated house lines so that they would run if something "in system" fries.

Hope your back improves soon. I can totally relate. I've spent many a day laying flat on the floor praying for death as mercy :rolleye1:

well, feeling better today but I didn't actually get out of bed until 4 pm. Took some pics but none of them came out very good.

Down to two red spot cardinals already. And they looked so good yesterday schooling together. :(

As far as the electrical goes, UPS are great for small systems but in my case, there's just way too much equipment to protect. I hope someone reading this with electrical experience can point me in the right direction for whole-house supression. I know it was posted before but I can't remember which friggin' thread it was on what forum.

what, are you CHICKEN?

BTW, I have always wondered what an "Environmental Driller" actually does...isnt that an oxymoron?

I may be the perfect example of an oxymoron!

I drill to sample soils and groundwater at potentially, environmentally impacted sites. If they are impacted, I inject "stuff" to clean up the soil and groundwater.

J, my nephew just moved to Portland, as close as my wife is to him, I could knock on your door any minute!
