OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

QT is always "offline" since it has no through-put to the display system. The only connection is the float valve for acclimation. It has an Octo modded by the Great Sherman (sherm71tank) Munster, UV, mangroves, and plenty of rock. It also has automated top-off via a LiterMeter III...this is one of my pet peeves about QT tanks...salinity is a real issue.

I always release after lights out and try to be present when the lights come back on. The last fish I added was a yellow scopas and it had a heck of a time but pulled through.

I am really excited about these two new fish, but both can be acclimation and introduction problems, so I am taking it slow and easy.

stop! I have it because I have to. I used to use a float valve for top-off, but then when I removed water for acclimation, the salinity would go down rather than equalize. Even with the temporary 29g Tall I use for extra QT sometimes, it gives me fits keeping it topped off.

Befreo I left for training I didnt check my salinity in my fuge. I gave my brother some water for a new tank. ANd left mu fuge disconnected with low salinity and it killed my pods..

SAlinty caught me..

Thanks Bax...and the feeling won't go away. I am getting really tired of this for sure.

Did some more surgery on the rainbow tonight. It is still struggling against STN unfortunately. Clipped a couple other corals too.

I just made an interesting discovery that will undoubtably solve my alk/Ca issues: Today I came home and the reef was at pH 8.18, the bubble counter was hopping along as usual, but the reactor was only at pH 8.02. This has been an on-going issue and I finally decided enough was enough. I started checking the entire CO2 delivery system:

Bottle full? check!
Bubbles flowing? check!
CO2 emitting from tube? no!
(but I did the classic moron move and removed the line close to the reactor and sprayed water all over myself.)
hmmmm...is it the one-way valve? no!
Is there a clog? no!
Why hasn't the bubble counter plug blown off? It would have to right?
What the heck is going on?
So now I am down to just a small amount of tubing coming out of the bubble counter, yet I don't feel any CO2 on my tongue...
Plug it with my thumb? yes!
What happens? A tiny needle-like stream shoots out of the base of the tube near where it connects to the bubble counter. Ahaaaaahhhh!! And I solved the puzzling puddle of SW on my walk-around...the damn thing has been leaking through a super small pinhole all along...and this is CO2 compatible tubing. :(

Problem solved I am stoked...now things should be working much better. pH in the reactor dropped immediately and I am back in business. I hope to report on my alkalinity testing some time this week.

no doubt. most of it soaked into my clothing, although I did the knee-jerk reaction and got some on the floor, and of course, power cords going into a DC8.

Thamks. I am headed for an MRI tomorrow. That's the primary reason why I have not been posting much. I am still running the kalk test and I hope to swap media sometime tomorrow.

I am also considering doing a night release of the two fish in QT. They have been doing well but both fish, a CBB and a scopas, will have a tough time assimilating in the display. My thought is to do it tonight so I have much of the weekend to observe what goes on.

No doubt, especially the Scopas, with those Yellow Tangs. The only fish that had an issue with my little squirty CBB was.....my Achilles. Yes, Mr. Non-aggressive harassed the CBB when I released it one night. I pulled the CBB, rearranged the rockwork (I could at the time), then reintro'd it. Everything was fine then. Go figure. :o

Good luck and best wishes for good results from the MRI tomorrow, Mr. JN!

Did the release a few minutes ago. Couple of ruffled feathers but absolutely no combat. We'll see how it goes when the lights come on!

And thanks for the wishes...MRIs are extremely difficult for those of us with traumatic brain injuries. The sound, vibration, and close quarters really beat me up. It will probably take a good day to recover, maybe more. For me, because of my sensitivity to sound, it's like being inside a jet engine.

 I missed all that thank goodness. I'm glad there are two mountain passes and 124 miles between my house and that nonsense:D

I'm sort of on a vacation, working around the house this week. Nothing exciting.

Good luck with the MRI J.

My wife is in a similar situation, she finds a good dose of valium pre MRI does wonders.

Hope it's all good in the end.
