OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

ABT Update: Looking very good, calm, presenting to the cleaner wrasses all day, no social problems. BUT, it did not eat tonight. I did see it eating off the rocks and tank walls, but I am concerned it will go the way of the naso. Tomorrow I will get some nori sheets (what is has eaten in the past) and try getting it to eat.

During feeding time, it actually hid behind some rocks.

There isn't any sign of aggression from the other fish? I would imagine that in a few days it will have established itself and exerted it's dominance. Then it might be time to start to worry about the other fish.

The PBT went after it last night, but seriously, I didn't expect that to last long since the ABT is at least 4 x its size. It is hanging out in the front of the tank getting a massage and when another fish gives it grief, it just chases them off and then returns to the parlor.

My biggest issue is getting it to eat. With no QT time to assess it and nurture it along, this is a very risky few days.

Harvest of mini-brittle stars from my filter floss. The floss is changed out every 5 days.

No luck with the ABT eating yet. I got a full run-down from the previous owner on eating habits but still it's a no-go. :(

I have spent the entire day trying to get it to eat. She offered to come a long way and try to coax it to eat, which I think might work, since fish get accustomed to their human friends, and adult fish do not like changes.

and figure this is just what leaves the rocks, climbs the walls, goes through my overflow, and into the floss. So how many are in the tank?

OK...so good news! After working on him all day at 8:00 pm he finally ate some nori off a clip. I don't usually feed this way, but I will use the clip until I can wean him off it. So, hopefully he will eat again tomorrow. I don't see any social problems but he is clearly wary of me. Perhaps that is because of his 2+ hours in a bucket acclimating to my system with me staring at him. It could also be partly due to the intense lighting and unfamiliar surroundings, or even perhaps that none of my fish are scared of him.

I nearly jumped for joy when I saw him tear into that nori sheet. Then I remembered I had a martini in my hand.

Sounds really hopeful for the ABT. With that addition, you now have my two favorite tangs the OST and ABT. Unfortunately, with only a 220 in my forseable furture, I have to be careful about big boys like the OST. Your ABT is huge! Everything I have read has indicated a max size of 10". I had wanted on of them as a center piece tang, but dang this guy's big!

Great news! Congratulations! Hopefully he'll continue to eat, now that he's had a taste of the good life. Have you thought about soaking his food in your marini?

yes, vodka does a body good. at least an old one like mine!

Bax, after putting this fish in and seeing how big he really looks in my tank, it confirms that I made the right choice many a time to not put in a unicorn or vlamingi.

The ABT (who was previously named Big Blue), actually makes my reef look weird. Makes the corals look a lot smaller, and the other fish as well. If you put any of the larger tangs in your 220, I would make it the OST, because they seem to have a slower growth rate.

His coloration is spectacular though under my 20K lamps. Almost neon blue fins. Another thing to note, is that even though he is quite large, he has some get-up-and-go. I also saw him doing a strange twitch or thrash with his head last night. IIRC, this is what one of teh naso tangs did as well. So I don't feel we are in the clear yet, but at least we had progress last night.

How big is your PBT? Anytime I add a new fish, which hasn't been for a while now, the PBT immediately lets them know that he is the boss. Of course, the Achilles lets the PBT know that the Achilles controls the tank.

OK...he ate again after the lights came on this morning. Still not very aggressive, but definitely a lot less worrisome at this point.
