OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

No I don't, although this time it was so apparent there was a problem, I did use Melafix. It seemed to help but perhaps not enough.

I probably should have separated them into different tanks and gone after aggressive medication, but that is not so much part of my school of thought. Maybe next time I have this happen I will try that.

So I continue the hunt for high grade Calcium oxide and have found a source in WA with 97.9% average assay. I am hoping to get a sample next week.

Currently the alkalinity is 9.0 dKh (Salifert) and things are going very well. Just as a reminder, I am running the Custom Aquatic "bulk kalkwasser".

I am currently working on a project where, if it gets funded, we'll be using absolutely gianormous volumes of Calcium Oxide. I've already asked the supplier if he can get me high grade powdered materials and he's going to hook me up. As I get more info I'll PM you and send a sample.

One thing to consider, calcium hydroxide is testy enough to handle, be wary that calcium oxide is a very serious inhalation hazard, up several notches from the calcium hydroxide Kalk mixes we are used to in the hobby.

%&*$@ me I want to kill that #@$%&@$ GSM clownfish. I was swearing so loud that my son came running downstairs to see what was happening, and I am in a sealed tank room. I was trying to glue a zoanthid colony onto a rock and she decides it doesn't belong there and starts biting my arm. I got so angry and disturbed that I dropped the colony into the rockwork, and this is an EXTREMELY rare zoanthid colony that only I and the Rev from Club-Zoa (who got them from me) have these in the US. (as far as I am told) So I pulled it out and clipped some off to get Nick's (GSMGuy) tank going with some wicked zoas, and this is what I get from the ***** fish. I had to tear apart the rocks, which of course she didn't like one bit, and grab them from the bottom. In the process I discovered a huge pile of detritus (now in solution) among other things.

&$%@, I WANT TO KILL HER. My son said if I didnt like her so much I should sell her, and I told him I wouldn't sell that ***** to anyone, not even my worst enemy. He did quip that it is probably the longest living fish ever bought Mario the @$@%&*@$.

And do I feel better now? NO!! I hate that beyatch. And that damn anemone is between 30 - 36" now for @#$%'s sake. I am scared to fall into the tank.

you should just spear her and be done with it :D Or maybe just a hook and line...then you can put her on a stake in front of the tank as a warning to the rest of the fish!!

then you can get some nonviolent commensal shrimp to host on the anemone ;)

I tell you I think about spearing her just about every day.

And I meant to mention something else: While hadling the zoas, some color came off on my gloves. Very weird, but a kind of orangish residue was left on my gloves when I touched the polyps, and it would easily wipe off as well. Anyone have this experience before?

I often get that on my hands when fragging zoo's...I may be wrong, but I think that is the palyotoxin...so don't lick it :D

That's interesting. I have of course heard the horror stories but never had a problem handling them with my bare hands. Because of the gloves, I could see it this time though. Seems strange that the toxin would be the color of the zoanthid, but I guess anything is possible!

This post brought out compassion, laughter and a touch of sympathy... Sorry to hear about that same clown that has been ruining your tank expeditions for what... 3 or 4 years now:lol:

Hey Hop, long time no hear! I know you are laughing with me! How's your system doing?

Marc, I have already tried to get her with a very owerful shop-vac, but she's too damn smart.

Haven't tried baiting a hook because I know damn well I would catch everything else in the tank first. The wrasses would snatch that in a blur. Probably drag my butt right into the tank too. Then the clown would eat my eyeballs.
