OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

maybe, maybe not. it really is a bit of a crapshoot no matter how you do it. Something else to sub for acrylic is perforated PVC sheet. I used it for my reactors and it is available in a variety of hole sizes and density. NOT CHEAP, but I think well worth it.

I am also concidering drilling PVC sheet or starboard.

The perforated or grid PVC is NUT$!!!!

If I use acrylic I would buy white or paint the under side with white Krylon. But it's still pretty inexpensive and if it builds algea, easy to remove and clean, I just need an extra one to rotate in and out of the frag system while cleaning.

no paint! just get black or blue acrylic if you don't want light passing through. Black would be excellent for taking pictures of frags BTW.

Hmmm? Hadn't thought of that, I was thinking reflectivitiy. But, they'll so shallow, that should not be an issue.

I'll be getting black for dividers for cryptic fuges, so I'll just order more for the frag racks.

Thanks!

I would get black, but sand it with very fine sandpaper to take off the reflectivity.

don't forget about my removable overflow combs.

Something for you to consider is that the eggcrate itself is leaching into your system and actually fuels the algal growth. I have done quite a bit of testing on this and would NEVER use it in an aquarium again.

I am striping every piece of egg crate out in the move. All frag racks will be drilled out of acrylic sheet. And all rock supports will scd 80 PVC pipe and sheets. I am done with EC!

This is the first I've heard of eggcrate leaching anything into a tank. I'll definitely take this issue into consideratiion when planning my reef tank.

Has anyone heard positive or negative things about a frag rack called mag-rack from Blackrock Reef?
http://www.blackrockreef.com/index.html
It attaches to the side of the grow-out tank (1/4" - 1/2" glass or acrylic) with water resistant magnets. The company claims the materials used to construct the racks are non-toxic and non-leaching - thus the racks are reef safe. The black mag-rack is made out of ABS plastic and the translucent mag-rack is made out of polypropylene.

I'm sure that $20 for a 8.5" x 2.75" mag-rack seems expensive when compared to the same size of DIY drilled acrylic sheet. However, I admit I'm comparing apples to oranges when you consider what it would take to reproduce the mag-rack with a DIY effort.

Thanks.

That's an interesting product. Obviously I have never tested it, but I do question whether ABS doesn't leach. To-be-honest, I believe ALL pastics have some reaction with their environment. Even acrylic has some oil, and the ability to absorb water to varying degrees depending on which type you have.

I feel PVC is the lesser of these plastics, but a good look at their data sheets might be in order. I have only messed around with the egg crate due to my personal observations that it grows significantly more alagal matter than any other surface in my aquarium.

And it happened again. Sherman came over last night and hung out for a while. Had a newb over before that for a couple of hours discussing all things reef. When the lights went out I told Sherman I needed to shut down the CO2. We went into the tank room and I read off the reactor pH which I think was around 6.32 IIRC.

Woke up in the morning to the realization that I never actually shut off the CO2!!!. Get down there and the tank is at 7.86 and the reactor is at 6.18. This is why I need a freaking break.

As much as itd suck to do, maybe itd be the best option, if you feel exhausted from the hobby. Its not really worth it sometimes when it feels like less of a hobby, and more of a burden or chore. Would you sell the tank and equipment Jonathan, or just get rid of the live stock?

selling the equipment, but not the tank. I had offered all of the livestock and rock for a flat price, and would give the tank to that person, but due to the beating it has taken, I will not sell it. I just do not want the liability.

I will probably cut it up and toss it in a dumpster, or maybe use or sell pieces for sumps etc.

I think holding it for the materials is a pretty good idea unless someone really wants it "as is".

I hadn't even thought of it until a guy came over to look at livestock and he mentioned it. He used to work for a tank manufacturer and he said the panels are still good for shallow projects like sumps, reactors etc. and that 3/4" would make extremely robust stuff. He said if I wanted to part the tank, name a price and he would come in with the tools and cut it up.

Definitly better then the trash!

3/4" is not cheap! And you can build serioudly bulet proof stuff for your next sump room! No splitting reactors in there!

BTW your PM box is full.

That's cool! When did you last add one? You need a BIG system, like yours, to keep one of those alive for any length of time. That's just too cool! I credit one with eliminating the residual HA from my tank start up, but once the HA was gone, so was the hare. I found mine to be a fascinating tank critter. Did I say that was cool? :)
