Ok... establishing a new tank and a large hitch hiking turbo has died... so do I leave him in and let him decompose or just remove him and salvage the shell? I do have plenty of small snails which I think are Collinista's will they clean it up??

This is really going to depend on where you are at with this new tank. If your cycle is over and all you have in the tank is algae eating snails, then I would take it out. If your cycle isn't over or better yet hasn't started you can leave it for a few days to start the ammonia cycle. But, if you leave it I would suggest putting something in the tank that will eat it. Hermit crabs or nassarius snails will do the trick.

No... in first cycle now... sounds like some nassarius to me... thanks all

I'd take it out. Have you ever smelled a dead snail before? Imagine that just sitting there. PU.

Ummm ok..so we are like 50/50 now... no "stink" yet though.... based upon previous comments went to local FS and bought some Hermit and Nassarius (2 crab, 3 snail).... it was like the Turbo had a hit put out on him... A Hermit and Nassarius both ran right for him... see pics.. So still not sure... considering what I bought... leave him in or pull him out??????

It's to damn easy to just get rid of it. It might be food for the CUC, but you really don't want a mess to begin with.

I dont think one dead snail will make a bit of difference in the long run as long as you let your tank run a full cycle and add your fish slowly. Ive never bothered pulling one snail out and have never had any problems. My serpent star usually beats me to any dead stuff before I even know its dead. If something is missing the first thing I do is see if the serpent is fat.
Let the crabs have it, so they dont get hungry and turn on your snails and each other.

I went out of town for almost a week and I had to have a friend take care of my tank. He knows almost nothing about SW tanks. I had a turbo die while I was gone. When I got back from my trip there was nothing but an empty shell and my parameters showed no ill effects.

My nassarius and hermits cleaned up the mess.

The reason I suggest taking it out is what Cloak posted above, who needs more chance of hi spike in nutrient input (algae) when your tank is new, and may or may not be still cycling? especially if it isn't needed.

Besides, didn't you say you had live rock? That's good enough to start a cycle coupled with the time the snail has been there already.
Anymore than that sounds like too much of a gamble for my taste.
But I have been known to be OCD about those types of things. ;-)

If its gonna cycle because of a dead snail, nows a good time for that to happen. A little extra cycle and patients never hurt. Atleast there's no fish in there yet. ( I think)

Yup no fish.... mid first cycle... so far no spikes... 1 piece of LR and a few base rocks... crushed coral on the bottom and have been pinching biozyme daily... tank has been up and running for about 2 1/2 weeks... all levels seem to be a-ok....

Snail (turbo) only made it about a week... the Collonista's (came on same rock) are flying around the tank slurping up every bit of food they can....
