Olasana Lagoon: High Energy SPS Nano Build Thread

It's a 70 gallon reef ready converted into an indoor greenhouse.

The overflow holes have fans to pump in fresh air at certain intervals. Temperature is controlled by flex watt heat tape, watering is by a MistKing and distilled water, lighting is a Nova Extreme Pro 6 x 39 watt fixture. The whole thing is controlled by a DA HerpKeeper.

The inhabitants are a CBB female green tree python and all the plants are orchid from Papua New Guinea.

This hobby got to where it is by people thinking outside the box and experimental ideas. if it wasn't for people with your attitude we wouldn't be seeing any sps in home reefs. Good luck.

+1... it's one thing to question things (like some people did), but it's completely different when people automatically discard a person's idea because it's not the "normal" way of doing things.

Glad the build is going well so far... keep it up.

Guys, while I appreciate the comments, I promise this is not a new, unique, out of the box way of growing corals. See Righty's post about his tank at work.

That Green tree python setup is sweet..........I hope you keep us updated on that also.

Barebottom has hit the herp world............I love it.

Hi Chris. Long time since I have followed one of your threads. Interesting tank you have set up. I always did like the Iwasaki bulbs, and have used the 400,s but had a preference for the 250w version. The 400,s seemed more yellow to me. I once ran a 400w in a large reflector, as the only light over my 180g cube style tank.

Look forward to following the growth progress. I see someone asked about fish. Any going in there?

Agree'd it's nothing new, just something you don't see many people doing since it's not very efficient. 400w Halide 2'-4' above your tank, or 250w halide 8"-10". Although I readily admit I loved my 2 400w w/luminarcs when I had them over my 5x3x2 tank. Currently I'm running a 20x20x10 tank right now, with a 250w colours are amazing. Don't see the need for the extra $$ on my electric bill.

Well, the halide is 16" above the tank. And it's not "inefficient" if you're trying to do what's right by extremely shallow growing Acropora.

I got bored and broke out my Kenko tubes.

Hi there Doug, I haven't decided on fish yet. I'm pretty certain there will be a couple in there though.

I'm fairly certain Lee Eng was doing this years before anyone on any hobby bb ;)

(Though he used straight outdoors lighting, heh)

I am loving this thread. I usually stay out of this section because of the poor information and advice from closed minds. I see almost weekly someone claiming that 10k or lower bulbs just grow algae and cannot produce corals with color when in fact if it weren't for those old Iwasaki 6500's this hobby would be nothing like it is today. I like to see these people who have been in the hobby a long time chiming in. Several years ago I realized that I am a noob in this hobby 9 years in, and will probably always be one because I am learning something new constantly. We never know enough and those that think a years or two of success makes them an experienced hobbyist are just deluding themselves.

Great tank and a perfect reminder of what this hobby started as, and I am one of the few who believe that you do not need multi-thousand dollar setups, controllers, powerheads that talk to your lights, the latest and greatest skimmer of the month, etc etc, to have great growth and color from SPS. I will keep my simple tank and try to pass on what little I know to those who may need it.

I am looking forward to seeing this progress and some current myths dispelled. Great Job on starting this thread!!!
