Olival's 120G Build

Oh, I'm in no rush at all! I didn't even know that SLASH had it until today! Frags are another story:rolleyes:

Hi Guys, just finished to clean up the QT and equipment...We are ready for a new fish...I was thinking on getting either a one spot Foxface or a Blue tang, but I heard that I would need a larger tank for the tang. Do you guys know if my tank is really too small for the Blue tang ?

I think in a 120 you should be fine. The fox face gets as big as the blue tang anyway.

I have a one spot and a blue tang in my 5ft 120.

One thing about blue tangs, theyre VERY susceptible to ich,so if you get one just make sure to put them in QT for a while. Even after that they still might have ich. lol

When you get the foxface make sure you get one thats colorful,my one spot doesnt color up alot of the times. I ordered him online though so didnt really get to see him before hand

Nice meeting you last night Marcos. This morning I woke up and starred at my stand and hood for about 20 minutes trying to sort how I might go about painting them white!

Same here nick. For painting the stand...no secrets really..sand it, Prime it and slap a couple of hands...Wax it let it sit for a couple of days and you are good to go...key is to use a roller and go slowly.....Or find someone to spray paint it for you :p

Yeah the issue with mine is that its all setup. Spray painting certainly isn't and option :)

Thanks Matt and great meeting you last friday.
None of those two, I was thinking about the famous Nemo's Blue tang (Paracanthurus hepatus).

Now a quick update on the tank...last Sat. I went to the Seals frag event, and I took 6 frag home...I putted them in the tank and now hoping everything goes well...so here are 2 pics of the some of the new frags in their new condo!

Hi Guys, a few updates on my build.

1st, I was off for the whole week in a business trip...no incidents, ATO is working fine, wife and Daughter took care of the feeding in my absence. Also, during the week, the Toadstool frag felt from where it was sit and my wife took the initiative to reposition to a place where, according to her, the coral would be happier, and turns out that it looks great in the new place...That's really awesome.

2nd, I have the brown algae coming on the rocks, I guess people call them uglies or something...I believe that shows that things are progressing in the right way and I should consider soon a CUC

3rd I finally got my Skimmer I was looking for a SRO 2K for a while and I found one in a good price at Gateway aquatics this weekend. It's perfect for my stand and build. It's running now and I'm waiting for it to break in.

4th, got the next guys for the Saltwater condo. The foxface unfortunately didn't look good so I went with plan B and got the Blue tang but when I was about to pay my wife, who went with me, asked if we couldn't get a yellow fish as well. Well with an appeal like that, who can say no...so we brought home a Blue and an Yellow Tang. Both are in the QT now.

They look great! Glad to see your moving along. I would add some of your cleanup crew soon. Algae is easier to control from the beginning rather than fight it after you have it. If you don't have GFO yet add that as well. I waited and I wish I would have had it day 1.

Hey MKart, Thanks, I didn't forget you advise yet. actually I'm planning to get the GFO Reactor this week.

Now, as a rookie, I'm super concerned with the Blue tang...it's acting really weird...it keeps the nose down all the time in a (what I think is) tentative to hide...I have some PVC elbows in the QT where she can not really fit in but is tall enough for her to hide behind! I tried to have her move around when I was vacuuming the bottom and she seems to be swimming fine. but this whole behavior of nose to the bottom is worring me.She ate the mysis yesterday but today I didn't see her eating.
Yellow is doing great, very comfortable in the Tank, swim around with no stress, eats well!

I'm keeping an eye on the ammonia levels....and so far I did 5% water change yesterday and today...removed a gallon and replaced 1 Gal of RO/DI, I want to drive the salinity down just in case some Ich pops up!

Now, is that a normal stress behavior or should I be looking at something else ?:headwalls:

Blue is really worring me. :s
She now is stick to the pump pipe that pulls water from the tank. I guess she is trying to hide and is all stressed out. Her color seems to be a little more pale than yesterday.
Just did a 20% water change with a new Saltwater batch that I had ready for other purposes. I think she is super stressed but I have no idea how to easy that! any ideas?
Would you suggest more hiding places ?

She should not stick to the intake. I would get a 2" elbow, larger if you need it, in the tank to hide in. I usually soak Mysis in medicine for fish in QT. Sometimes I think the QT causes stress because they are usually small have few hiding places.

a really sad update. the blue tang didn't make through the night, I found it dead today when I went for the morning maintenance.
Good news is that the Yellow is doing great, eating like a champ and swimming around with no problem!
That's my first loss in the hobby but I'm really upset, specially since I have no idea why. Water parameters are good, and the other fish is perfect!
It thought me a lesson and follow my guts, I was after the Foxface and little afraid to get the blue...but situation lead me to take the blue and it didn't turn out good. Oh well!

From the other part, GFO Reactor and CUC ordered. I hope that will cheer me up!

Sorry to hear about the loss of the Blue Tang, Marcos...It was likely beyond your control since the yellow tang seems to be doing fine.

Adding a bigger structure for new fish to hide might help the stress levels in the future. Also, If your QT is in a room with a lot of traffic and movement, you might want to black-out the glass and just view them from the top. I've done this before with vinyl cabinet/shelf liner before and it seems to help.
