OMG! my electric bill doubled!

Wow, they were all over my installation within a day or two to give me a time and day they would install it. I assume they think I don't know what I'm getting into. They think I want to pay them just under 12 cents per KWH during the day to run all my stuff not knowing all the electrical items I have and that I fully intend to run everything at night. Last month I think I was right around 2200kwh on their three tier system of 7 cents, 6 cents 5 cents. After talking with AT LEAST 4 or 5 different people and all of them giving me the same cents per kwh I made up my mind pretty quickly.

ohh,ho ho, ha ha ha! LOL!
Thanks for the laugh.

SCE three tiered billing is much higher! closer to 18, 25, and 30 cents, with at least the third tier (>200% baseline) going up to 48 cents in November!

My 2000 kwh usage for last billing was billed at over $500!

I would imagine you get a higher baseline allocation too in Indiana.

Thanks for the info BennyinCA. I was interested in getting an estimate as well for various rate plans available.

The guys rattled off a bunch of numbers that seems really small (1 10th of a cent per KwH) for peak vs off peak usage then asked me if I could shift my usage to non-peak hours.

I told him I could probably swing 500 KwH from peak to non peak (I can get half that with just my lights) and he signed me up. They are going to send me an analysis of my potential savings and schedule installation of the new meter. He said that you have to agree not to move for six months and that there is no charge for the conversion.

My bill last month was $637 and I need to do something or my tank is going to go from being an SPS tank to a FOWLR by the time the $0.48/Kwh pricing kicks in. I replaced my return pump that consumed 170W with one that only uses 30W so that should help a bit.

I've also been investigating running my lights on Solar. They make some pretty nice solar kits for powering pool pumps.

What NEW meter and conversion are we talking about?????
I'm confused????

SCE comes out and replace your regular meter with a meter that has a clock on it so they can bill you how much electricity you use during peak hours (most expensive) to the off peak hours (cheapest)

They sure make it complicated! How the heck are you supposed to figure out if you can save money by switching to a different program?

Basically I still need to cut my usage in half! We have fluorescent bulbs everywhere practical, energy efficient refrigerator, disconnected the second one, pretty efficient main pump on tank, only one 250MH and T5s, almost never run the AC. If ours goes up as much as everyone else's, I will have to find a real job!!!

for those of you considering the Time Of Use rate plan, be sure and go over the numbers very thoroughly and/or consult with an SCE technician.

From Cthetoy's links above, the On Peak summer rate is 38 cents/kwh + 11 cents delivery. Winter On Peak is much better at 3 cents.

I would imagine to achieve any real savings, the vast majority of your usage would need to be after 6pm and before 10am. Keep in mind all the things that run 24/7 (tank pumps, fridge, clocks, cable box, etc).

I suspect my next bill will be in the $40-50 range, and that's with running three nanos.

Nicole...
How the heck could it be that low. I think my Hello Kitty nightlight costs more than that per month. :)

I don't remember a bill < $100 since the 80's.

My bill is always about $60, paid $90 last month with new AC installed. 2bd, 2x175w halides, 150g tank, etc.

I would suggest you get a new Hello Kitty Nightlight. What model are you using anyway? I have a baby girl on the way and want to make sure that wasnt on the registry.

On benefit is that it's a LOT easier to calculate your bill. My plan is to run only my return pump, Tunze's and CACO3 reactor 24x7. I'll run my lights, skim, and chill during off peak.

I'm also thinking about using X10 to turn off my Tivo's and other stuff during peak times. We only have another month of "Summer" and I figure it will take them that long to install the meter anyways.

This is all good and well for those of you closer to the coast. Here I can't imagine going home to a house with no AC when it's 105+.

That I guess just sucks up some of the COL savings from living here.

Yeah, here we might not need AC, but you aint buying my place for any less than $1.2M. Same place, not on the water and inland would sell for $250k. Now complain about the mortgage and beg to swap it out for a $700 elec bill. :eek1:
