Online vendors and gaping clams

How does everyone feel about clams that look gaping or not fully extended on vendor sites? It's understandable that with shipping stress etc that they would be like this but I was just wondering what everyone elses opinions were.

Do you just buy from places that have good reputations?

Well, what I should have asked was:

"Would you buy a gaping clam from a place that you know normally sells good clams, and has a good reputation?"

I decided not to BTW....

Nope, gaping is too risky, IMO. If I was really interested in the clam, I would ask them to hold it for a while, or give me a 100% guarantee for a pre-arranged period of time.

I think there are a couple of factors to consider. 1) some clams gap more than others, I have a couple of healthy maxima's that each have different gap openings, some bigger some smaller. 2) You would hope that if the store was reputable as stated they wouldn't sell it to you unless they thought it was heathly. You have to remember they probably took the picture shortly after it arrived and has probably returned to normal. I would just call the place and ask them if it is still gaping like the picture, then ask if it is healthy.

Just my thoughts though
