Onyx hosting rbta

How likely is it that onyx clowns will lose their color if they are hostEd by an "unnatural" anemone. I have an rbta i do not really want to get rid of. Is it more likely they wil not develop their color or is it just random? One of my lfs has a pair of Rods clowns hosting a hammer but they have all of their black still
 
I've heard he same things. I'm trying it with my Onyx and a GBTA.

thanks, im not sure if i should get an h.malu and to get some onyx or just keep my rbta and get a different clownfish. i really like the look of onyx clowns and i like how most if not all of rod's onyx's seem to be hosted pretty readily. i'm just not sure if its worth getting rid of my rbta and taking a chance with a h.malu
 
If it is truly a H. malu there is a good chance they won't use it at all. If you are talking about H. crispa, then they will probably use it as a host, but they still may lose their black. Mine did.
 
All my Malu hosted all the A. percula I put in the tank Quickly. The color did not faded in my Malu pair.
But then some of my Magnifica cause color loss while other Magnifica did not cause color lost when I put the same pair of A. percula with them
 
i think it has to do more with the individual clown and not the nem. i got a picasso pair and the male is jet black and the female is not as dark. she is hosting and he is a little at night in a gbta.
 
My same Onyx pair loose color with some Magnificas but not with other Magnificas. Also I never have one clown loosing color while the other one does not. From the above to reasons, I think the cause of color loss is due to the anemone, not the fish. This is just a guess from me according to my experiences
 
Based on my talks with breeders of Onyx clowns, I think it goes beyond the clowns and anemone combination. For example, I believe that environmental conditions are a factor. I spoke to a reputable breeder (known for their jet black Onyx clowns with a high percentage of black dorsals) who mentioned they blast their clowns with bright light, which they believe helps to develop the deep black.

I was told by an anemone expert that all of her clowns shifted colors in all anemones except Mertensii (and I've never seen these for sale).

I also believe that food fed to the clowns can make a difference.

Long story short, not every anemone combined with every Onyx will cause color shifting, but based on what I've seen, I do believe that there is a greater possibility of blacks fading with Onyx are combined with BTAs.
 
I have a pair of Onyx clowns and they seldom show interest in my RBTA. Maybe over time they will host, however, as mentioned it all comes down to the fish if they attempt to be hosted.
 
Yeah, so far so good! I've heard that depending on who you got it from (breeder/strain) has an affect. Mine are SA...Also, maybe diet has an affect, ours get cyclop-eeze once a day (they eat several times of course LOL) and maybe that helps...?
