open mouth question

I fed my RBTA about 3 hours ago with some silver sides and its mouth is open and i can see the food. does anyone know what is happening? my sailfin tang, yellow tang and my foxface seem to try to be pick out the food. would this cause what is happening? Ill take pictures and post them in a few minutes. the mouth is also like an oval instead of being a circle

I think I just killed my beautiful RBTA for the reason you stated. Bought some Silversides, not rotten, no freezer burn but the day after I fed my RBTA he started moving all over th tank, is all deflated, mouth is wide open and some of his tentacles are falling off. Water parameters are perfect, salinity is perfect. It had to be the food.

how big was the silverside?how big of a anemone?

It was about 1/2 of a medium silverside.

A lot of people use silversides, but I see a lot of people have problems with them, too. Granted I don't have any experience keeping nems myself, but I might try feeding pe mysis once the nem recovers.
One must remember that while an anemone CAN catch fish in the wild, it's not often they DO. They spend a lot of time eating waste and detritus, and so they tend to do better when fed smaller food particles.

Hold off on feeding, maintain water quality, don't give up on the little guy yet.

I am very very temped to pull him out, he is not looking very good at all. He is still attached to a rock which is the only reason I am keeping him in. HE also moved again last night and I saw him inflate his foot which I thought was a good sign. I hope he pulls through, he was beautiful.

I'd check the water PH with a Digital PH meter and make sure it is 8.4-8.5.
From my experience, the top three things that effect Anemone health is : 1st PH, 2nd Salinity, and 3rd Alkalinity.
BTA's can make good come backs...good luck

well it was probably not hungry kus this morning when i checked on it, it had gotten 2 inches bigger. how do u keep silversides from becoming freezer burnt?

I do not have a digital pH monitor. I have 3 anemones in my tank and the other 2 are great, but they didn't have silversides.

Kinda off topic but a year ago i had been feeding my salt fish some frozen shrimp which they had been eating for months. fed my frogfish and puffer fish and hrs later they both acted very strange and died. they were in seperate tanks also. I had done nothing to the tanks and clownfish with the puffer that had flakes was perfectly fine. so in your case its strange as well. good luck

So now the anemone has moved itself to the back of rock and under aledge so if he dies I would have to take apart my entire aquascape..... PLEASE OHH PLEASE DO NOT DIE NOW!
