Opinions on underrated fish...

Looking for opinions on some of the most underrated fish in our hobby. Please try and think of a fish with character, reef safe and under $75. I'm looking to add another fish so just looking for ideas.

McCoskers wrasse. Beautiful, reef safe, and tons of character. One the few fish that will come to the glass when I watch my tank. You should be able to get one for about $50.

Hmmn, underrated ...... as in not appreciated, not kept?

I happen to think the PJ cardinal is underrated. I really like the way they saunter around my tank, without seemingly a care in the world. They don't sleep either, apparently. I think the dusky wrasse is underrated - not a better pest remover to be had (murder on small hermit crabs though), including pyramid snails, flatworms, and bristle worms. I think the convict tang is underappreciated. A cool looking fish and an excellent grazer. Mine cleared a 90 FOWLR of all GHA in about a week.

Saddle back puffer.... All puffers as being not reef safe. I've had my saddleback for a year and a half in a reef. During that time it has only give after small snails.

Gold assessor, golden Midas blenny. My Midas is always out swimming. I can see why a chevron is underrated... Their adult colors are stunning, boring, but their patterns are definitely what makes it stunning. Not under $75 that I know of so I am not sure why someone listed it.

Wow great suggestions everyone. My wife loves the PJ Cardinals I just think they're a bit ugly lol especially as they get bigger. I should of mentioned I currently have a ORA Snowflake Clown, Tailspot Blenny and a Pygmy Cherub Angel.
I'm going to look at some of the wrasse suggestions. Always wanted a Leopard but I'd probably have to add another 2" of sand and I hear they can be hard to keep. Keep the suggestions coming! ;)

Yes exactly what I meant...I'm going to check out the Dusky Wrasse thanks!

Any of the goatfish, though if you have mobile inverts that are small enough for them to eat, they will be eaten.

Two already mentioned -
Chalk Bass
Gold (or Yellow) Assessors

Not mentioned -
Purple Firefish
Randall's Assessors
Pygmy Wrasses (Tanakas/White Banded)

If your a wrasse guy there are tons of extremely colorful and active wrasse out there some under 75$ some over that. They are all jumpers is the only downfall to them

* Assessor Sp.

* Fang Blennies

* Chalk Basses

* Possum Wrasses

* Zebra Dartfish (just be sure to have your tank covered!)

* Many of the more unusual, evenly tempered damsel species (Rolland's, Talbot's, azure, springer's, bleeker's, tuxedo, pavo etc.)

* Lemon Chromis (Amblyglyphidodon ternatensis) - Will typically spawn in captivity, which makes for a very interesting display, even if they aren't bombshells appearance wise...

* Cleaner Gobies (Neon, sharknose, yellowline)

* Some of the less predatory, less commonly seen cardinal species (Ochrestriped, orange striped, Seale's, ringtail, checkered etc.)

... All very underrated fish IMO :dance:
