Orange Hammers

I think supplementing with a picture of something else you have that orange is counter productive when you're trying to solidify representation of your self confidence. This isn't about you, your acan, or you're perfectly sound ego. It's about the original poster wanting to know if dropping a significant amount of money on one of these is worth it - and in my opinion it isn't. Obviously, the original poster is talking about something that is a lot of money to him/her, now whether that it is $10 or $250 what's the difference? A good deal is a good deal. I don't care if you got one the size of a semi truck for $75. I just want the OP to know that I don't think he/she will ultimately be happy with the decision to drop a lot of money for something that will inevitably end up looking mediocre.

Leave me out of this from here, you've got other people saying the same thing. The pictures say enough. Best of luck finishing up school, rydr119.

Well, if you've never seen a orange hammer or torch that was better than "mediocre", you're opinion is WORTHLESS (if even that;) ).

I dont know if it's from being in Tulsa(not exactly a coral hotbed) or your hookups in the "industry" are crap but i can assure the OP, there are really nice orange torches and hammers out there and they do hold their color.

To the OP, imo, the color will not fade. If you've seen nice ones, they will most likely stay that way. I've had mine for about 6 months or so and it is just as orange as the day i bought it.

Jared... You are being nothing but a buzz-kill to this thread. We like orange hammers, get over it! :fun2:

AquaSD- Beautiful pieces!

hey Keckles,

IMO it IS worth it to go out and buy an orange hammer, if you are a euphyllia nut. obviously you are not... or perhaps im wrong. but please keep your negative comments out of this thread.

and for those of you who want to see a REAL orange hammer, check this out. (aussie wall hammer, definitely grade AAA)

Those are really nice Dan10342, but the ones I am looking for are neon orange and are of the wall variety. Im talking like the fruit color orange. lol So I am now thinking that the ones I have seen in person aren't going to keep that color. I figured it was to good to be true.

yeah, mine is more of a pastel orange... more yellow under daylight. it screams yellow under actinics... so i guess one would call it "gold" rather than "orange"

if you want super orange, either look for a hammer like the one i posted above (the cream of the crop) or something like an orange fungia, agent orange acan, zoas etc.

Now those are the hammers I'm talking about dan13042. So they do keep that great color from what u guys have posted. I almost bought a fist size wall in that neon orange color but it was like $110. So I waited and I have been looking since. Mt hammers are probably my favorite coral and I have pink, purple, and green but that orange is just awesome.

I ordered one similar to the one Dan posted 2nd pic but much smaller. It was cheap and a last minute add on to an order. It does not have that color in my tank. I think lighting plays a big part in it. I was thinking orange is the new brown.

I've been looking for a True Orange Hammer as well. I've never seen a True Orange in person but many that were labeled orange were actually brown. Under a lot of actinic lighting the orange will glow like dan10342's.

SDguy, that is a beautiful Hammer. I'm going to contact Reef Empire.

Thank you. FWIW I only run 250W DE Phoenix 14K's on icecaps. No actinics, no power brites, etc etc. You can imagine how it glows under such supplements. I know the RE guys run much bluer lights on their LPS display tank, and the orange euphyllia they have in there glow. They also said that the ones they have took months to turn a nice orange color. Mine was a lucky break. Came in looking like it had been in their care for years

Lol'd a little about people getting up in arms about Orange Hammer/torch.

They exist. I got one from the first shipment that came in almost a year ago. I got the "Orange" Torch also, but would call that more of a golden color. My Hammer is Orange:

Lighting is a 6 Bulb Tek Fixture.

Direct linking the image because it's large.

then i honestly dont think you had the same colored hammer....

and anything without actinics (besides pink birdsnest etc) will look more "drab"

Sorry, I don't consider coral colors under full actinics to be true...nice but not true. How many times do you order something from someone that is pictured under 20k halides and actinics...they look nothing like the pictures. Your pictures show the same thing, your plate is orange, your hammer is "brownish".

Orange is definitely the new brown....

I gotta go with SDguy on this one;)

My lfs has consistently been getting in orange hammers and torches for the last 6 months and they DO look just like Sdguy's 1st pic in person. I have an orange torch and it looks just as orange as SDguys hammer in person.

Granted, there are ALOT of pinkish ones like the last pic SDguy posted floating around but there are nice orange ones as well. As he said, they aren't crazy orange like an aussie acan or some zoo's but they are definitely orange without any special lighting or photoshopping.

Where do I find one?

well since 20k halides, and actinic bulbs are available to pretty much any hobbyist who WANTS them, i don't consider it cheating.

and there are a plethora of other corals out there, green, purple, blue, gold, etc that look "brown" under just a 10k daylight bulb. So i guess it could go both ways.

lastly, i used photoshops "eyedropper" tool, which takes the color at which you point the eyedropper at (any photoshop user knows what this tool is)... and i got ORANGE and not brown.

and last i checked, BOTH hammers which i posted (or well one my friend posted) are not this color

ORANGE!

BROWN! (and green)

BROWN!

and lastly, a COMPARISON with a TORCH coral
(a brown one a green one, and an ORANGE!!!/gold one)

(not my photo, thanks GaryM.)

>"How many times do you order something from someone that is pictured under 20k halides and actinics...they look nothing like the pictures."

And to answer this... usually when i bring the coral home, and let it settle in for a few months, it looks BETTER.

Yup, you got me. It's all about my ego

You want solid orange? Here, go get yourself an acan and leave us ego filled orange hammer lovers be.

Peter that acan is awesome!!! Is that an orange crush acan?

It's pretty clear by now, the Euphyllia fans like the orange hammer/torches and are VERY happy with them and actually think they are orange.

The non-euphyllia fans are apparently looking for psycho neon blinding orange and anything less is "brown"

I don't follow trends in corals. The first time I saw an orange hammer in a dealer's tank I was floored. They never offered anything like 'em back in the 90's!

Hey thanks Joseph! It's technically an Agent Orange Acan, IIRC, since it has green centers. I grew that from a single freebee polyp from Harold :eek2:
