Oseymour's Red Sea Reefer 350 (75 gallon) Build Thread

The red sea reefer would be my next top choice. Love what you have in the tank, especially the beautiful tangs and angels.

Do you have a screen on top?

No screen top - only had one jumper so far, a flasher wrasse.

That's ballsy lol, I had one jumper and learnt my lesson. RIP Mandy the Mandrin

A mandarin jumped? Wow! I've never heard of one jumping before.

All of all the jumpers I've had over the years, they always seem to jump at night. I'm adding some kind of moonlight feature so the fish don't get scared in the dark.

I have the same reefer 350, looking at upgrading my skimmer. With the Skimz 162, do you need to put the skimmer on a base in the sump due to the 10" water level. How you like the skimz vs Omega 150?

Thx

yea it was defiantly a rough week, lost a pair of clowns, then the mandy jumped.

Sorry to hear about your clowns. I'm resisting getting a screen top. I'm seriously considering a mandarin.

The SM162 is an external skimmer so it takes the water height almost completely out of the equation. I like it because it's easier to tune and it creates so much bubbles. It uses 2 different pumps - one to feed it and one to create bubbles. I have it fed from a manifold on my return. The Omega 150 was working fine but I saw this on the BRS 160 build and had to try it out.

This is making me seriously reconsider a reefer 250 to get a 350. Good job, great looking tank.

Thanks, I like how it's progressing so far.

I was using Kalkwasser in my top off container to maintain calcium and alk. In the winter this helps me to maintain a high PH when the apartment windows are closed. We had some hot days last week and my cooling fan was on non-stop. This caused evaporation to increase and I overdosed the tank.

I usually maintain alk at about 8.5 and it's at almost 12! My mushrooms and SPS are not happy at all. No polyp extension on the SPS. The other corals look fine so far.

Wouldn't it be easier to just dose the two ?

I ended up going back to BRS 2 part with dosing pumps.

I'll probably go back to using Kalk in the winter when my windows are closed.

not worried about the Kawk leaking into the tank?

No reason to - I stopped mixing Kalk with my ATO water and went back to 2 part.

Nice tank, beautiful ! Great job with the photos as well ! Thanks for sharing !

Thanks, I like how the tank is progressing.

Cool, I thought you were using kalk. Your using two part with the brs dosing pumps?

I had great success in the past using the BRS 2 part with dosing pumps
good stuff

Yep I'm using BRS Dosing pumps, very reliable and they dose at such a slow rate that even though I dose 15ml at once, I don't see much of a PH spike.

I always had them connected I just never turned them on.

I would like one of those returns broadfield made you for my own reefer 170. Any idea on how to make one yourself?
