Oseymour's Red Sea Reefer 350 (75 gallon) Build Thread

Very cool, thanks. I was reading the thread you posted in about going bare bottom and saw your post and I knew you had a good amount of sand.

I tried bare bottom when setting up the tank but decided not to, it came of my frustration with deep sand beds on my first couple of tanks. But in the end I decided to add sand.

Have you had any issues using the Vectra M1 to feed the manifold? Is it able to maintain the pressure well?

I am in the process of setting up my Reefer 450 and I was thinking of doing the same thing. I was also inspired by Broadfields set-up. I am going to try to do the same thing with the Loc-Line.

How's the purple tang doing?

The purple tang is doing fine - He's getting really aggressive so I might have to find a new home for him sooner than I thought - Maybe in a month or so.

I have no issues maintaining the pressure with mine. I think I've tuned the overflow 3 times since February and even then it was micro turns.

What was your reasoning in adding a tang that typically requires 125+ gals.?

I was comfortable adding that specific tang because

  • I can easily find another home for him - it's something I've done multiple times in the past. I know a lot of people say they will but I do. It's something my wife and I like doing, we buy them young and keep them for a year or so and then they move on. I live in NYC where it's easy to find a reefer with the proper tank size. I'm a member of manhattanreefs.com where finding another reefer to take the fish is easy. As a last resort I can take it to Manhattan Aquariums in Manhattan that will give me some credit or fish food for it (It's never come to that but it's good to know it's an option) I get the fish when they are young and re-home them.

  • I "rescued" this purple tang from a 20 gallon aquarium. It's a friend of mine but what he was doing to the fish was terrible. He was sick with HLLE, thin and barely moving. I nursed him back to health in 4 months. I expected to have him for at least the end of the year but he's growing faster than I thought. I got him at about 2 inches, he was shy, now he's 3 1/2 to 4 inches and is harassing everyone else.

If anyone is in and around NYC and is interest send me a PM.

Awesome this is good to know. Anything you wish you would have known before setting up the Reefer? Or anything you wish you would have done differently?

Here is an updated full tank shot from early this morning

I'm currently down to 6 fish.
  • Copperband butterfly
  • 2 Clownfish
  • Blue Tang
  • Leopard Wrasse
  • One Spot Foxface

My two flasher wrasses jumped out, My flame angel disappeared and I had to re-home the purple tang because he was getting aggressive

I added a refugium to my sump. Not for nutrient export but to grow pods, I want a mandarin eventually.
I also changed to a Skimz DC skimmer from the Skimz recirculating model. It game me more room to work with in my sump. It's dead silent and I'm still in the process of tuning it.

I really need to work on the electronics area of the cabinet.

I have 2 Neptune Systems DOS Units. Dosing calcium and alkalinity and a mix of vinegar and vodka to help control nutrients. I have one free head which I'll probably add magnesium since it seems to drop fast in my tank.

Great looking reef man ! How do you like the aquawind? is it pretty quiet?

It's pretty quiet, I actually have a chiller and the aquawind was backup. I was going on vacation and needed redundancy.

I think it was a waste of money ($70) It's low profile and nice but a $10 plastic walmart fan would have done a better job at a cheaper price.

I'm finally at the point where my SPS is growing and thriving

My zoa garden grew in nicely

Looking good. About to pull the trigger on the 425XL. What size did you drill your ato for your fuge?

I used a 1 inch bulkhead. I kept the flow low enough where I don't think I need a secondary emergency overflow. I also used a bulkhead strainer to keep any algae from getting into the pipe. This worries me a bit because the outlet is right next to my return pump.
