OT: any golfers

Are there any golfers around? I was talikng with Dave(sus) a little while ago and he is a golfer too. We were talking and thinking maybe we could get some kind of scramble together. Maybe like a 2, or even 4 person team, best ball kind of thing.

Any one interested, or even willing to just golf?

Well I'd like to see if we can get a few teams and play a best ball scramble.
I'm sure we have all played something like this at some point, and they can be a lot of fun. No one has to be a great golfer as there is a team.

If your not familiar with what a best ball scramble is, here are some basic rules, but these can be changed or modified as we like.

Each team will consist of four players. Single players are welcome, and will be assigned to teams as applicable.

The game will be played in "best ball" or scramble format. Each player hits a drive off the tee. The group then selects the best drive and all other players in the group get their ball and take it to the location of the best drive. Each group member then hits a shot from the location of the selected drive. The best second shot is selected, and the other group members get their ball and take it to the location of the selected second shot. All group members then hit a third shot from the location of the selected second shot. This continues until the ball is putted out. Remember to mark your putts...if everyone in the group misses a putt you must select the best one in order to continue.

Each player in the group must count at least 3 drives (tee shots).

No player in the group may count more then 5 drives (tee shots).

Ladies and men will tee off from their designated tees.

On their score card, the team must mark one score only. In addition, mark which team member drove on each hole.

Aside from the scramble rules, we will observe the normal rules of golf.

Well Best Ball and Scramble are two different formats...

Best Ball is when you and I both play a round of golf and we take the lower score one each hole between us.

Scramble is when we both hit a shot and then choose which of those shots we want to continue with, picking up the other one.

I know what you meant, but just for clarification. Now if you want to make it really interesting, we could do alternate shot!

Nice, I like golfing too. Just played 18 this past Sunday at Twin Peaks in Longmont. Phil likes to golf as well. Let me know when.

Yep John you are correct, sorry for not clarifying, here is a good description.

Scramble vs. Best Ball
There is a common misconception among golfers that scrambles and best ball tournaments are the same. Some even say “best ball scramble,” but there really is no such thing. The guy (or gal) who came up with the terminology must have been drunk or crazy, because both are very misleading.

The one thing both formats have in common is that teams typically have 2 or 4 golfers, competing against other teams.

Now, you might think that in a best ball format, you would use the best ball out of your team. Nope! In a scramble format, you might think that each player is scrambling around the course. Wrong again!

In a scramble, each player hits their own shot from the tee. The team then chooses the best shot. Players whose shots were not selected, go pick up their ball and the entire team shoots their second shots from where this “best shot” came to rest, (typically) with the option of shooting from within a club length of this “best ball” spot (except on the green of course). You cannot, however, move from rough to fairway, or fringe to green. After the second shot, this process continues as many times as necessary until a ball is in the hole. The team score for each hole is how many “best shots” were needed.

In a best ball format, each player on a team plays their ball from where it ends up (no “best shot” or picking up and moving the ball to another location). It can be viewed as each player playing a typical round of golf, with their own score for each hole. The team score for each hole is the lowest score by any one player. As an example, a team of 4 players shoot 4, 5, 4, and 6 on a hole. The team score for this hole would be a 4 because it was the lowest score.

Both formats have advantages and disadvantages.

By playing in a scramble, teams are able to put up some low scores, because there is a good chance that 1 out of 4 golfers will have a pretty decent shot. One thing I do find in scrambles is that players do no play their typical golf game. If the first player to tee of hits one safely down the fairway, every player after usually tries to crank one a mile, leading to bad habits.

When playing a best ball format, each player gets to play their own game. This gives everyone the chance to know how they scored for the course, because each player has an individual score for each hole. The team scores are usually much higher with this format, because it’s not a collective effort for each shot, like in a scramble.

When playing in a scramble, “Drive for show, put for dough!” In order to win, your team must be able to make putts of a decent length.

So would you guys rather have a two, or four man team? I guess it would depend on how many takers we have, huh? I am up for doing it any day, weekday or weekend, I'm flexible.

i can really only do weekends....
which may be hard to reserve a whole block of tee times

Well I think if we reserve far enough out we should be good. Most courses won't let you reserve more that 5-7 days out, but if we tell them we are doing a tournament they will likely work with us.

Does anyone have a coarse in mind? I'm thinking some centraly located.

Lets see... Centrally Located...

Cherry Hills Country Club - Leif, get us on :)

Well if we are close to home... Eaton Country Club. I have a membership there!

Buffalo Run is nice.

Riverdale Dunes is a great course!

John

Im in i would love to play and set up a 4 man i also have my boss who plays alot and he would love to play so if possible i would like to be counted in, so i have a total of 2.

The more the marrier!!

To kepp it fair I suggest we avoid playing anyones "home coarse". I live on GreenValley Ranch CC and love yhat coarse and am very familiar with it but don't think that's fair.

I ve played buffalo run once before and it seemed pretty nice. I would be up for that again.

Players definitely don't have to be reefers every body is welcome.

I'm always up for a little betting too! Let's call it an "entry fee" not a lot but like $10 or $20 per person.

Jpc & Chris campbel I think you are the only phone #'s I don't have PM me that and I contact every one
