OT- Anyone into Ceramics?

OK folks, the Kiln I mentioned earlier in this thread has got to go! Here are the details:

Hardly used Cress B-23-H kiln. My dad bought this for my mom probably 25 years ago, she used it a dozen or so times, and then lost interest in ceramics. She stored it in her house for a while, but when she sold her house it made it to my house, and it's been sitting in the basement taking up space since. We're having a garage sale this weekend, and it's GOTTA GO!

Here is a link to the current model Cress B23HT-240 (List Price $1,250), which is essentially exactly the same as the B-23-H that I have in my possession:

http://cressmfg.thomasnet.com/item/ceramic-kilns/manual-3/pn-1164?&seo=110

Honestly, I'm not sure what has changed between the B-23-H and the B23HT-240, as all the specifications match what is on the model plate for mine, and they even used the same picture for both kilns (I was able to find a picture of the B-23-H from the Internet Wayback Machine's year 2000 version of Cress' website).

A few pictures I just snapped are attached. And it comes with a box of extras, including a lunch bag full of what I think are little ceramic holders. The garage sale is at 34 Pine Knoll Drive in Chili (off Chestnut Ridge Road) tomorrow from 9am - 4pm. Stop by if you'd like to see it in person. Will deliver locally and / or help carry it into your house, if required.

As a note, I know NOTHING about this except basically what I posted here. I don't know what my mom used it for (other than making "ceramics"), I don't know how to use it, nor do I even know if it still works (though presumably it does, since it did the last time my mom used it, and it has been very well cared for since).

Asking $300 OBO at the garage sale, but will sell it for a no-hassle $250 to anyone on here that might want it. If you're interested, stop by my house tomorrow for the garage sale (address above), or PM me here.

Thanks!

Jason, good to meet you yesterday, thanks again for the kiln, I hope to get it fired up very soon. I'll definitely try a bunch of frag plugs - any requests on sizes, shapes?

Anybody know of a good place to get clay, glazes, etc? I'm going to try Rochester Ceramics in Webster at lunch today.

Your tank is looking great, too - thanks for taking the time to show me your system.

Dan,

Nice meeting you too. Sorry if I talked your ear off last night showing you my tank. As you might have guessed, I don't have that many people over the house that REALLY care about tank! And thanks for your kind words - I think the tank is doing pretty well, but as I told you last night, I certainly don't consider myself an expert by any means, so positive comments from the reef community do mean a lot to me.

As for the kiln, I hope it serves you well. I can't say that I miss it, but the corner of the basement where it stood for the better part of 10 years certainly looks empty. :sad2: oh wait, I meant

I should have sold it years ago. Of course, if I had, you probably wouldn't be it's new owner either. So, I'm glad it went to a member of the "family".

Let me know how it works out for you!

So, this will be going in my new basement which doesn't have a floor yet. The floor will be poured next Saturday (hopefully) and then I need to wire a 240 outlet for the kiln. Some stairs to get down to the basement might be helpful, and maybe a walkout door, but THEN I can start firing things in the kiln. I'll post pics soon.

How many people use the ceramic frag plugs? How are they compared to the concrete ones?

YES! Will fire for frags! ha ha! Seriously though, once it's up and running if anyone wants to fire stuff, let me know ;)

Ceramics are much better than the concrete. No curing and they don't breakdown like the cement ones do. I was trying to talk one of the girls here at work into buying it so she could make me plugs, so I'm down for some when you get it fired up.

we just have to find you a pottery wheel now, Dan. Might have to see what a high school art teacher wants to do with her old one.....always thinking....lol.

I found one on Craigslist, but I literally need to pour a basement floor before I can set up shop, so I may wait on it. I'll probably kick myself though in a couple weeks when I can't find a good wheel.

Well, I know Finney just got a new one last year and the old one is just sittin' in storage...i'll ask. :):artist:

Any of you ceramics hobbyists ever do commissioned stuff? Besides reefkeeping one of my other hobbies is bonsai. I don't think any of my trees deserve nice pots yet, but I've always felt that it would be cool to get custom pots once I'm at that point.

Just remember the made pots for plants need to have holes and need to be thrown extra thick because we all know how strong roots are.

That's one of the things I'd like to try making, actually.

Just saw this thread... for the original poster, the East Area Family YMCA in Fayetteville has a tremendous series of pottery classes for all experience levels. 637-2025 x216.

I'll let you know when I start to think about repotting any of my trees, maybe we can work on something together. I have a stack of commercially made bonsai pots in the garage but none of them really fit with any of the trees I have right now, which are all just in disposable plastic pots at the moment.
