OT: Anyone into firearms/firing ranges/hunting?

Its a Ling Cod. I shot it point blank from 2 feet away and it tried like hell to bite me. Weighed in at 15 pounds. Tasted like heaven, especially with the abalone I ate with it.

Wow.... Shooters and divers in here? Awesome. I've had guns most of my life. Nothing too fancy. 20g shot.. marlin 22 and a schmidt ruben sportarized to 308. Just like to shoot every now and then. We like the outdoor in gault. up to 500yards. Bring what you 'brung'.... shoot what you "brung'. As for hunting... Pheasant and quail.. Been quite awhile since the last hunt.

Diving... I love scuba but have not been hunting underwater yet.... Looks great. Been diving since 98'. Own two complete sets of gear including tanks.

I haven't been hunting for animals in quite awhile. But my brother still hunts, so when he is getting ready for the archery season I will usually break out my bow and go to the bow range with him.
I was pretty good, now it take me half the season just to get my pull and release back in check.

I think the only thing that I would feel comfortable hunting in CA would be wild boar. They're non-native, invasive, and destructive to our native ecology. Plus theirs no shortage of them here in the northern portion of the state.

Actually from the fish and game reports over the last few years the mountain lion population has gone above reasonable rates, which is not only threatening other populations, but making them move closer to human populations in search of foods.
So if I decided to go out on a hunt in the near future, it would most likely be for mountain lion, but since my favorite form of hunting is archery....well, I am not sure, I am that steady in my shot, at the range I can hit the center of the target up to 40 yards about 3 out of ten arrows, 30 yards about 6 out of ten arrows, 20 yards 9 out of ten arrows....do I want to get with in 20 yards of a mountain lion? not really....

Shiveley, Add wild turkeys to your list for the same reasons as pigs.

Twisted, I'm not sure if you were kidding, but it is illegal to take mountain lions in California as they are a specially protected mammal. Fish and Game has found the mountain lion population to be increasing. Studies have not found direct impacts to prey populations due to mountain lions. More suspect than lions are changes in the weather/water year. Also lions aren't necessarily moving into populated areas as much as humans are moving into mountain lion habitat. Here are a couple of good links:

I hope this info helps. There is a lot of other good information out there, but this is what I found quickly.

PM me if you have any questions. I don't spend a lot of time on the forums. Back to reefing fun now...

Sorry, I wasn't refering to California. My father did a hunt in Arizona...or Colorado...or something.

There isn't anything in CA I would really consider taking the time to hunt anymore. I've never tried bear, but all of the deer around here are so small and so gamey tasteing that I would rather get my meat at Winco.
I have gone hunting for problem coyotes <hunting domestic animals near my brothers house> That was entertaining for a bit, but after awhile it was worthless, no food from it, no trophies since they are plain mangy, the only thing it did was waste ammo and protect a few dogs and cats.

Bear would be fun...just not with my bow. I did go out with my brother and watch him hunt wild turkey with the new gullotine blades and that was just more on the funny side. Go to an archery site and do a search for the video on the hunters useing those new arrow tips.

Imagine trying to get those out of a tree in one piece though....

I was thinking about buying some of those to mow the yard with!

BANG BANG!!! Moose season open i love to hunt. I know there's a deer around too. I do more bow hunting than gun thou....

I may be interested in some cross hobby trading for frags if anyone has any decent rifles/pistols they want to get rid of. :)

PM me.

I have a couple older bows, Ones an old Hoyt Raider that is pretty darn old, not sure of exact model year, but very heavy compared to todays bows, I think it is tunable up to 55 or 60 pounds. Haven't used it in a few years.
The other is a PSE recurve that is naked, and was rarely used. I think it is a 66 inch tip to tip, and is only 35#'s. Both are right handed.
Not sure I want to get rid of the PSE. But the Hoyt is pretty much worthless to me, or anyone that has a bow, good starter bow. I would probablly let go for $100 bucks if someone really wanted it. Has a site I was testing with called a pendulm site, so might want to replace it, I didn't like it at all. Has a whisker biscit arrow rest. Coupld probablly even throw in a few arrows, I would have to look, think I have the side mount quiver for it somewhere too, but not sure.

While I haven't hunted in "kalifornia" yet for big game, I have blasted quite a few ground squirrels out on my property. They are destructive little buggers. As for wild meat, I've tried moose, white tail, blacktail, and elk, and I think so far the moose was my favorite. Not very gamey, but more "sweet". Elk would be a close second. I agree, most of the deer I've tried from california are too gamey, though deer jerky can be quite good!
