OT: Cutting the cord and HTPC's

Update

Update

I thought I'd update this thread. Yes, Time Warner is still kissing my naughty spot ;), and everyone stopped complaining a while ago.

We have been happily streaming Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon content (plus all the channels on the Roku), and I found that I could hook up my external hard drive to my Blu-ray player to play content that I have stored.

A big development over the past couple of days is that I installed a free piece of software called Plex Media Server on my home computer. (I built this computer 9 years ago and it's running LXDE over Ubuntu 11.10. It's a real dinosaur!) I can play any of my media that's on my external hard drive to my Roku in Hi-Def flawlessly (movies, TV shows, my entire music collection, and all of our digital photos). I've ordered a second Roku for the big TV in the living room, and we really don't have enough spare hours in our lifetimes to watch all of the content that's available to us.

Again, sports is the biggest challenge for folks who want to cut the cord. I really only watch NFL games, and they're broadcast over the air. I haven't bothered to look into alternatives for viewing sports broadcasts, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're out there.

I'm also enjoying the $80/month I'm saving. I've already saved enough to pay for two Rokus and then some!
